This morning prayer for safe travels is written for the start of a day that involves a drive, a flight, a commute, or any journey away from home. Pray it before you leave, while you are still at the kitchen table or sitting in the car with the keys in your hand. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Morning Prayer for Safe Travels
Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day. Before I step out the door, I give you the road ahead, the sky above it, and every mile I will cover today. I know I cannot see what lies around the next bend or in the next hour, but you can. Keep my eyes clear, my reflexes sharp, and my mind calm enough to notice what matters on the way. Guard the other drivers, pilots, and passengers I will share space with, and let me be patient and courteous with each of them.
Father, some of this trip carries weight for me. I may be worried about traffic, about arriving on time, or about the people waiting for me at the other end. Take those worries from my hands and hold them for me. Where I am anxious, give me steadiness, and where I am tempted to rush, give me wisdom to slow down. Watch over my family while I am gone, and bring me home to them again safely tonight. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am heading out, and I need you with me. Go before me and stay beside me on every mile. Keep me alert, keep the others on the road safe, and calm my heart if fear rises. Bring me to my destination and back home again. Thank you for going ahead of me today. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer while you are still at home, ideally just before you start the car, lock the door, or check your bag at the gate. Keep your hands busy with something ordinary, such as gripping the steering wheel, putting on your shoes, or folding a boarding pass, so that your body and your words stay together. If you are the one who is staying behind, you might pray it for a spouse, child, or friend who is leaving, placing their name where the word “I” appears.
You can also invite someone else to pray it with you. A family member, roommate, or friend can say the lines aloud while you listen, or you can read it together over a cup of coffee before the trip begins. Afterward, you might keep a note of the prayer in your phone or glovebox so you can return to it on the road.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and beside you on every road you travel today. May he keep your going out and your coming in, and bring you home in peace to the people who love you. May his watchful care surround you wherever you are, and may you arrive safely and rest well at the end of the day.
