This morning prayer asks God to help you love the people you will meet today, including the ones who are easy to love and the ones who test your patience. Pray it when you first wake, before your phone or your to-do list pulls your attention away. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words for the people on your heart.

Morning Prayers for Loving Others

Lord, I thank you for this new day and for the breath you gave me to start it. Before I reach for my phone or think about my list, I give you the people I will see today. Be with my family at breakfast, with the ones who will be short-tempered before coffee, and with the ones who will need a patient ear. Let my first words to them be kind, and help me notice when someone needs more than a quick hello.

Help me love the coworker who frustrates me, the neighbor I would rather avoid, and the friend who has been quiet lately. When I am tired, remind me that you are patient with me, and let that patience flow through me to others. Give me eyes to see who is carrying something heavy, and give me the courage to ask how they are really doing. Guard my tongue from sharp words and my heart from quiet resentment.

Father, I cannot love well on my own strength. Fill me with your love so that it spills over into my tasks, my conversations and my choices. Go before me into this day, and walk beside me through every interaction. Let the people I meet see something of your kindness in me tonight, even if they never know where it came from. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I start this day by asking you to fill me with your love. Help me be patient with the people I live with, generous with the people I work beside, and kind to the stranger I pass. When I forget, remind me gently, and help me turn back to you. Let my words and actions this morning point people toward your goodness. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

Read this slowly as a checklist for your day, and pray that God would shape your patience, kindness and humility in each conversation you have today.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

(WEB)

Jesus gave this command to his disciples, so ask him to help you love the people around you in the same way he has loved you.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

1 John 4:11

(WEB)

Use this verse as a reminder that love is rooted in what God has already done for you, and ask him to let that love move through you to others.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the way you will clothe yourself today, asking God to help you put on compassion, kindness and gentleness before you speak or act.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version while you are sitting on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table with your first cup of coffee. Keep your hands open in your lap or around the mug, a small reminder that you are receiving rather than gripping the day. If you have a spouse, roommate or child, you might pray the prayer together and name the specific people each of you expects to see.

When you feel the day going sideways, return to the shorter version while you walk to your car, wait for the elevator, or stand in line. A friend or small group can also pray this prayer with you over the phone, asking God to help each of you love the people in your own circle more faithfully.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you today and walk beside you in every conversation. May his patience steady your tongue and his kindness open your hands. May the people you meet this day feel seen, valued and loved because you crossed their path.
