This is a morning prayer for a father, written to be prayed at the start of the day before the first demands arrive. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names, worries and hopes that belong to your own father. It takes about two minutes and works well over coffee, in the car, or beside a bed.

Morning Prayer for My Father

Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before the phone rings and the list starts, I bring my father to you. You know his body, his mind and the years he has carried. Be near him as he wakes. Where he feels pain, give him rest and strength. Where he feels fear or confusion, quiet his heart with your presence. Help him to know he is not alone in whatever this day holds.

Father, go before him today. Guide his steps in the work, the errands and the conversations he will have. Give him patience with the people who frustrate him and kindness toward those who need it. Where he is weary, renew him. Where he is grieving, comfort him. Where he has made mistakes, bring him to honesty and let him receive your mercy. Keep his love for his family strong and let him feel it returned.

I also ask for myself, Lord. Let me honor my father today with my words and my patience, and let me not take the time we have for granted. Hold us both in your hands. Whatever happens before this day ends, let us trust that you are faithful and that your love has not run out. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you see my father this morning. Walk with him through this day. Give him strength for what lies ahead, peace where he is anxious, and comfort where he hurts. Let him sense your nearness and let me be a source of love to him. Thank you that you never leave us. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this as you picture your father stepping out of his door this morning. Ask the Lord, who made heaven and earth, to be the one he looks to for help before he looks anywhere else.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and thank God that his mercies are new every morning. Ask that your father would wake today able to receive a fresh measure of that faithfulness.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this over your father’s tiredness. Ask God to give strength to the weary and to renew whatever energy he has lost through worry, age, illness or hard seasons.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this to bring specific anxieties before God, naming the ones your father is carrying today. Pray that the peace of God would guard his heart and mind while he works through them.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray that your father would trust the Lord with the decisions and uncertainties of the day, not leaning only on his own understanding. Ask God to make his paths straight as he walks them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this in the first ten minutes after you wake, before you check messages or news. If you can, sit near a window or hold a warm cup in both hands so your body settles while your mind turns toward God. If you live with your father or are visiting him, you might pray it aloud beside him, or say it quietly as you pass his door.

If you are not able to be with him, pray it while you drive, while you cook breakfast, or while you fold laundry. Invite other family members or a friend to pray the same words on the same morning, so that your father is carried by several voices at once. Return to it whenever you remember him during the day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your father and keep him this day. May the Lord make his face shine upon him and give him peace that does not depend on how the hours unfold. May he rest in God’s love, know that he is seen and cared for, and walk into each moment with courage.
