This morning prayer is for the hours before a job interview, when nerves are high and the day feels like it hinges on one conversation. Pray it over breakfast, in the car, or in the bathroom mirror while you get ready, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words. Either way, it asks God to steady your mind and go with you into the room.

Morning Prayer for a Job Interview

Lord, I start this day with my stomach in knots and my mind running ahead to questions I have not been asked yet. Thank you that you already know this morning, this room, the people across the table, and the outcome I cannot see. Quiet the noise in my head. Help me remember the work I have done, the skills I have built, and the honest reasons I want this job. Let me think clearly when I hear the first question and not panic when I do not know the answer right away.

Father, I ask you to go before me in the drive, the parking, the waiting room, and the handshake. Give me a steady voice and a kind manner toward everyone I meet, from the receptionist to the hiring manager. If I stumble, let me recover with grace and not shame. Keep me honest about what I bring and humble about what I still need to learn. Whatever happens when I leave, let me walk out knowing I gave it my best and trusted you with the rest.

Thank you for being near when I am anxious and for caring about the details of my life, including this one. I place this interview in your hands, and I place my hopes in your good purposes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am nervous about today. Calm my heart, steady my breathing, and help me speak clearly and listen well. Remind me that I am not walking in alone, and let my focus be on being honest and kind. Whatever comes next, I trust you with it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Before a day that feels crowded with what-ifs, pray these words by naming your specific worries about the interview and handing each one to God. Ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind so that your thoughts settle enough to think clearly.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse to admit how much of the outcome you cannot control. Pray that you will lean on God’s understanding rather than your own anxious calculations, and that he will guide your steps through the morning and into the room.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Let this psalm turn your eyes from the stress of the morning toward the one who helps you. Pray it as you look out the window or walk to the car, asking God to be your help as you prepare to speak about your work.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse to focus on faithfulness rather than on impressing people. Ask God to help you do your honest best in the interview as work offered to him, which frees you from needing the perfect performance.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you feel unsure how to answer a question or present yourself, pray this promise. Ask God for wisdom in the moment, trusting that he gives generously to those who ask.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet spot before you leave the house, such as a chair by the window or the kitchen table before anyone else is up. Keep your résumé, a pen, or the job posting nearby so your hands have something to hold while you pray. If you feel your breathing getting shallow, pause after each paragraph and take a slow breath before reading the next.

If someone close to you knows about the interview, ask them to pray the prayer with you or over you, or to text you a verse before you go in. A friend or family member can also remind you of the good things you have already accomplished. Pray it once in the morning and again briefly in the car or before you walk through the door.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord steady your heart and sharpen your mind today. May he give you clear words, a calm presence, and a deep sense that you are known and cared for. Whatever the outcome, may you walk out of that room held by the God who goes with you into every door.
