These morning prayers for our church are written for the start of the day, when you want to bring the congregation, its leaders and its people before God before the phone, the inbox and the errands take over. Pray the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs you carry. The shorter version works when you have only a minute before you leave the house.

Morning Prayers for Our Church

Lord, I come to you this morning with our church on my heart. Thank you for the new day and for the people you have gathered among us. Be near to our pastors and elders as they prepare to teach, visit, counsel and make decisions today. Give them clear minds, patient hearts and the courage to speak the truth in love. Keep them from weariness, and remind them that the church is yours and not theirs alone.

Father, go ahead of our families as they head to work, to school and to the hospital waiting room. Be with the widow who will sit alone at lunch, the young couple worried about money, and the teenager who has not told anyone how heavy this week has been. Let our members be quick to listen and slow to judge, and let them notice the person who is quiet at the back of the room. Make our church a place where people are known and where no one carries a burden unseen. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless our church today. Strengthen our pastors, comfort the sick and grieving among us, and help every member to love someone well before the day ends. Guard our families on the roads and in their work. Make us faithful where we are placed, and let your presence be known in our homes, our offices and our conversations. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the work our leaders and volunteers will do today, asking that the building of the church would rest on the Lord and not on our own strength or schedules.

Romans 12:12

Rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer…

(WEB)

Bring the hope, patience and steady prayer of this verse to the people in your church who are waiting on a hard answer. Ask God to keep them joyful and persevering through the day.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for the growth of your congregation this week, trusting that the God who began a good work among you will carry it on to completion.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the encouragement that flows between members. Ask God to make you and your fellow believers quick to build one another up in small, ordinary moments today.

Hebrews 10:24

Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works…

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your prayer for how the church will show up for one another today. Ask the Lord to stir up love in you and in those you will meet, and to prompt you toward good works.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer while the coffee is brewing or during the first few minutes before the household wakes. Keep a copy of the church directory or the prayer list nearby, and let your eyes rest on a few names as you speak. If you have a few minutes in the car, you can pray it there too, and if you are praying alone in a quiet room, you might write the day’s names on a sticky note and place it on the kitchen table.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, such as a spouse, a roommate or a small group member who meets on a weekday. Two people praying the same words together can remind each other of the names they might forget, and they can call or text the next day to ask how a particular need turned out. Over time, a short daily habit like this can knit a congregation together far more than a once-a-month meeting.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless our church today and keep every member in his care. May he make his face shine upon our pastors, our families and our neighbors, and give each of them peace for the hours ahead. Go in the strength of the one who goes before you, and know that you are held.
