This morning prayer is for anyone who is about to travel, whether that means a commute, a long drive, a flight, or a trip to a place you have never been. Pray it before you leave the house, in the car before you turn the key, or in the airport while you wait to board. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for Those Traveling

Lord, I start this day by handing you the road ahead. You know every mile of it, every turn, every intersection, every stranger driving beside me and every plane or train that will carry me today. Keep my eyes clear and my mind awake. Slow my hands when I am rushed and steady my thoughts when I feel the pull to hurry or to drift. Protect the people I love who are going out the door with me, and guard the ones I will not see until I arrive.

Father, some of my travel today is routine, and I have grown careless with it. Some of it carries worry: a delayed connection, a tight schedule, a meeting I dread, a family I am heading toward who needs me. Quiet those worries and remind me that you are already in the places I am going. Go before me to the gate, the office, the hospital, the hotel room, or the front door I have not yet reached. Give me patience with the people who slow me down and kindness toward the ones who are frustrated too.

Thank you for the gift of movement, for the ability to get where I need to go, and for the people who make the journey possible, from the driver and pilot to the mechanic and the traffic officer. Keep me humble and grateful as I go. Bring me home safely tonight, or wherever my day ends, and let me arrive knowing I was never out there alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading out now, and I ask you to go with me. Watch over the road, the rails, or the sky between here and where I am going. Keep me alert, keep the people near me safe, and calm my heart if it is racing. Lead me where I need to be today and bring me back to you at the end of it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Read this verse as you step out the door and ask the Lord to keep your going out and your coming in. Let it remind you that your comings and goings are never outside his watch, whether you are close to home or far from it.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the people traveling with you, and for those who will be on the road or in the air today. Ask God to send his angels to guard each of them along the way, trusting his care over every step.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When your plans for the trip feel uncertain or your schedule keeps shifting, bring those plans to God in prayer. Ask him to make your path straight, and give him the decisions you cannot control.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear or anxiety rises about a long drive, a flight, or an unfamiliar place. Speak the promise of God’s presence aloud and let it steady your breathing before you move on.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse over yourself when you are going somewhere that feels intimidating or new. Ask God to make you strong and courageous, and to remind you that he goes with you wherever you travel.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment that is already part of your routine, such as while the coffee brews, while you buckle your seatbelt, or while you wait at the departure gate. Keep your hands busy in a way that helps you focus, perhaps by holding your car keys, your boarding pass, or your bag strap as you speak. If you are driving, pray the shorter version aloud before you start the engine, and then return to silence so your attention stays on the road.

This prayer also works well when shared. Read it together with a spouse, child, or friend who is traveling with you, or ask a family member to pray it over you before you leave. A parent can pray it over a child heading to school, and a pastor or small group leader can use it for someone going on a mission trip or a work assignment. Praying for one another turns a solitary journey into a shared trust in God’s care.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every road today. May he guard your going out and your coming in, and may you arrive wherever you are headed in peace, with a grateful heart and a clear mind. May his presence be your companion until you return home.
