Morning Prayer for a Single Parent: Words for the Day Ahead

This morning prayer is for single parents who wake up already carrying the whole day on their own shoulders. Pray it before the house wakes up, in the car on the way to work, or while the coffee brews. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for a Single Parent

Lord, I am awake before the sun, and already the list is long. The lunches need packing, the permission slip is still unsigned, and the bills are sitting on the counter where I left them last night. I am doing this alone in the way that matters most day to day, deciding and carrying and remembering. Be with me in it. Give me clear thoughts for the choices I have to make before the school bell rings, and patience with the small arguments over shoes and breakfast that will test me before eight o’clock.

Father, I ask you for the strength to get through the hours at work, and for kindness toward the people I meet there. Keep my mind on what needs doing and free me from worry about what I cannot control. When I am tired, remind me that I am not finishing this day by my own effort alone. Go before my children to the school, the bus stop, and the playground, and go before me into every meeting and phone call. Let my children feel your nearness through the steadiness of their home, even when the house is quieter than it used to be.

Thank you for the gift of this new day and for the small mercies already waiting in it. Teach me to notice them, a warm cup, a child’s laugh, a neighbor who waves. I give you this day, the parts I can plan and the parts I cannot. Keep me faithful, keep my children safe, and let my love show up in ways that are real and enough. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I start this day tired and a little afraid of how it will go. Walk with me through the morning rush, the work hours, and the evening that follows. Give me enough wisdom for each decision and enough patience for each small need. Hold my children in your care and hold me too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the day already feels too heavy to lift. Name the places where you feel unsteady, and remind God and yourself that he is a refuge you can run to before the first task begins.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you look out the window before leaving home. Ask God to be the one who helps you each morning, and let your eyes lift from the pile of worries to his faithful care.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when yesterday’s mistakes or exhaustion are still pressing on you. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to let that newness shape how you treat yourself and your children today.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this verse to hand over the anxious thoughts that crowd in with the first alarm. Bring each worry to God by name, and ask for the peace that guards your heart while you face the day.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this for the moments when your energy feels spent before lunch. Ask God to give you strength where you have none left, and trust that his help is available even when your reserves run low.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment that already belongs to you, such as the minute the coffee is brewing or the drive before the day begins. Keep a cup in your hands while you pray, since holding something warm can steady a racing mind. If you have a few minutes alone, sit where you can see the room your children will wake up in, and let that view remind you whom you are praying for.

If you have a friend, a relative, or a church member who knows your situation, ask them to pray this same prayer for you on certain mornings. Even a short text saying “praying for you today” can carry you through a hard school run. Write the names of your children on a note by the door and read it on your way out, so that the prayer continues with you into the hours when you cannot speak it aloud.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this parent into every hour of the day and keep watch over the children they love. May his peace settle on the tired heart, his strength meet every task, and his faithfulness be the first and last word over this home.
