This morning prayer is for asking God to shape your words, your patience and your attention toward others before the day gets busy. Pray it when you first wake up, while coffee is brewing or before you check your phone, so kindness is on your mind before the first hard conversation arrives. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Morning Prayers for Kindness

Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before I step into my day, I bring my heart to you, because I know how quickly I can become short with people when I am tired, rushed or worried about my own list. Soften me before I leave the house. Let me notice the person behind the counter, the coworker who looks stressed, the child who needs one more minute of patience, and the family member who is carrying something I cannot see.

Give me gentle words today. When someone annoys me in traffic, in an email or across the dinner table, help me answer with grace instead of sharp replies. When I am tempted to assume the worst about someone, remind me that they may be fighting a battle I know nothing about. Work your patience into my tone and your compassion into my hands, so that small acts of help come easily instead of grudgingly.

Father, I also ask you to show me where kindness is needed most. Put a face in front of me that I would otherwise walk past, and give me the courage to act when I see the chance. Let my kindness today be real and not performed, pointing people to your goodness rather than to my own. I trust you to supply what I lack for this day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, make me kind this morning. Slow my tongue, soften my heart and open my eyes to the people I will meet today. Help me see them as you see them, and give me a patient word or a helping hand when someone needs it. Let your kindness flow through me in ordinary moments. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to make you kind in the small irritations of the morning, not only in large moments. Ask him to remember how generously he has forgiven you, and let that memory soften your reactions to the people you meet today.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and ask God to clothe you with compassion and humility as you would put on a coat before going out. Name one person you expect to see today and ask for these qualities to show up in how you treat them.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray these verses by asking the Holy Spirit to grow kindness in you as part of his work, not something you must manufacture alone. Thank God for the fruit already growing and ask for more of it before your first meeting or errand.

Proverbs 3:27

Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to show you a good deed that is within your power today. Pray that you would not delay or dismiss the chance when it appears, whether it is a phone call, a favor or a word of encouragement.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple summary of how to live the day well. Ask God to help you act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with him in each decision and conversation that comes your way.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still in a quiet place, such as your bed, a chair by the window or your kitchen before the household wakes. Keep a cup of tea or water in your hands as you speak, so the moment has something steady to hold onto. If you are praying with a spouse, child or roommate, read it together and take turns saying the sentences about the people in your home.

When the day tests your patience, return to a single line from this prayer, such as “Give me gentle words today.” You do not need to recite the whole thing again. A brief remembered sentence, prayed in the middle of a difficult call or a crowded commute, can turn your attention back toward kindness and toward God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you today and walk beside you in every conversation. May he give you patience when you are tired, gentleness when you are tested and eyes that notice those who need a kind word. May the peace of God guard your heart and guide your steps as you bring his kindness into the ordinary hours ahead.
