When something hard hits your family, such as a diagnosis, a job loss, a separation, a child in trouble, or a sudden death, it can be hard to know what to say to God. The prayer below is written for exactly those moments. You can read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own family’s names and worries into it.

Prayers During a Family Crisis

Lord, our family is in a hard place right now, and I do not have the strength to hold everything together on my own. I am scared for the people I love, and some nights I lie awake running through the what-ifs. Please be near to each of us. Be near to the one who is sick or hurting, near to the one who is angry or withdrawn, and near to the one who keeps quietly carrying more than they show.

Give me wisdom for the decisions in front of me, the phone calls I have to make, and the words I do not know how to say. Help me be patient with the children when they are frightened, and gentle with my spouse when we are both worn thin. Where we have hurt one another in the stress, show us the way back to forgiveness. Keep our home from becoming a place of fear, and let it be a place where we can still tell the truth and still laugh sometimes.

We bring you our money worries, our schedules, our unanswered questions, and the parts of this we cannot fix. We trust that you see what we cannot see and that nothing about our family is hidden from you. Hold us steady, one hour at a time, until we can see the next step. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I cannot think clearly right now, and everything feels like too much. Be my steadiness today. Calm my heart, guard the people I love, and give us enough strength for the next hour. Show me one small thing I can do well, and help me trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1-3

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

(WEB)

Use this psalm when the ground under your family feels like it is shifting. Pray it slowly, naming the specific fear that is loudest, and ask God to be the refuge you run to instead of the panic you run from.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the person in your family who is most broken right now. Ask God to draw close to that heartbreak specifically, and to let them feel that they are not alone in it.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear keeps returning, read this verse aloud and let it be a promise you repeat. Ask God to replace the anxious voice in your head with his own steady word, and to strengthen your hands for the work in front of you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

This passage speaks directly to the worry that keeps you up at night. Bring each anxious thought to God as a specific request, thanking him for what he has already done, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you cannot yet see any good coming out of your situation. Ask God to be faithful to his promise in ways you may not recognize for a long time, and to help you trust his purposes even while the outcome remains unclear.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version first thing in the morning, before the phone and the news have a chance to set the tone for your day. Sit somewhere quiet, ideally at a kitchen table or in a chair by a window, and keep a pen nearby to jot down anything you want to bring back to God later. Holding a cup of tea or resting your hands open in your lap can help your body settle while your mind wanders.

On harder days, keep the shorter version in your pocket or saved on your phone, and pray it in the car, in a hospital hallway, or in the minutes before a difficult conversation. You can also invite a trusted friend, a pastor, or another family member to pray this prayer with you, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Praying together often makes the weight feel less like it rests on one set of shoulders.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be close to every person in this family and keep each of them steady through the days ahead. May he give rest to the weary, courage to the frightened, and gentle peace to every anxious heart. May he be the one who holds the family together when you cannot.
