This simple prayer for the end of the day is for the hour when the work is set down, the dishes are stacked, and the mind keeps replaying what went wrong or what is still undone. It is meant to be prayed in the evening, before sleep or while you are settling into bed. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words from there.

Simple Prayer for the End of the Day

Father, the day is closing and I bring it to you as it is. Thank you for the hours I was given, the small kindnesses and the ordinary work that got done. I also bring you what I did not finish, the words I wish I had not said, and the worries I carried home with me. Forgive what needs forgiving, and help me set down what is not mine to carry tonight.

Lord, I am tired, and some of my concerns are still awake in me. Be near to the people I love and to the people I could not help today. Watch over those who are sick, those who are grieving, and those who are lying awake in fear. Give my family rest, and give me rest as well, so that I do not spend the night rehearsing tomorrow.

Quiet my mind and steady my heart. Let me trust that you were present in every part of this day, and that you will be present in the hours I cannot see. I release this day into your keeping and ask you to bless my sleep. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the day is done and I am worn out. Thank you for what went well and for what kept me going. Forgive me for what I failed to do or did badly. Take the rest of my worries and hold them for me tonight. Let me sleep in your peace, and wake to a new morning with fresh hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes, and let it turn your attention from the day’s unfinished business to the God who keeps watch while you sleep. Pray it as a statement of trust you are choosing, even on nights when the feeling has not arrived yet.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the weight you have been carrying to Jesus by name. Pray this verse by naming the particular burdens of the day, one at a time, and asking him to take each one.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to confess the habit of working past your limits or lying awake out of anxiety. Ask God to teach you rest as a gift he gives, not a reward you have to earn.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words over the day that is ending and over the one about to begin. Thank God for his mercy in the morning, and ask him to remind you of it when tomorrow feels heavy.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn this verse into a list of what you are anxious about tonight, and pray over each item with thanksgiving. Ask God to guard your heart and mind as you move from prayer into sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time in the evening, perhaps after the lights are turned down or while you brush your teeth, and keep it as a steady habit. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel beside it, and keep a glass of water or a folded blanket nearby so your hands have something gentle to hold. If you share a home, you might pray the prayer aloud together with a spouse, a child old enough to join in, or a roommate, and let each person add one thing from their day.

If your mind wanders, pause and return to the first line rather than starting over. If the day was hard, you may need to pray the shorter version several nights in a row before the longer one feels right. Keep a small notebook by the bed so you can write down anything you are holding, then pray over the page before you turn out the light.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who made the day be the one who holds it now. May he bring rest to every tired body and quiet to every restless mind. May the light of his face shine on you through the night, and may you wake to find his mercies new. Sleep well, and be at peace.
