This short prayer is for the moments when you want to give up, when the work feels pointless, the waiting feels endless, or your strength has simply run out. You can pray it in the morning before the day begins, in the car before going into a difficult meeting, or late at night when sleep will not come. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once you find your footing.

Short Prayer When You Want to Give Up

Lord, I am tired in a way that sleep does not fix. Some days I am ready to set down everything I have been carrying, the job that drains me, the relationship that keeps hurting, the worry about money or my health that never seems to lift. I do not know how much longer I can keep going on my own. Please meet me here, in this exact place, and do not let me pretend I am fine when I am not.

Give me strength for the next hour, not the next year. Show me one small faithful step I can take today, and help me take it without measuring it against what others seem to manage. When I feel like a failure for wanting to quit, remind me that you see my effort and that you do not measure my worth by how well I hold it all together. Hold me up when my own hands are too weak to hold on.

I trust you with what I cannot carry, and I ask you to carry it now. Let my weariness lead me to you instead of away from you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I want to give up and I do not have the strength to keep going. Carry what I cannot carry right now. Give me enough courage for this next hour and help me take one faithful step toward you. I put my hope in you alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

When you feel crushed in spirit, pray this verse slowly and let it name what is happening. Ask God to draw near to you in that exact place of heaviness, trusting that he does not turn away from the discouraged.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your own energy has run dry. Pray that the Lord would give you renewed strength, not by making you stronger on your own terms, but by letting you wait on him in your weakness.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

When you are tempted to quit doing good, pray this promise back to God. Ask him to keep you steady, to help you see that your faithfulness is not wasted, and to give you patience for the harvest he has not yet shown you.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel you have nothing left to offer. Ask God to let his grace be enough for you today, and to show you that your limits are a place where his strength can be seen more clearly.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus in prayer, using this invitation as your own. Tell him plainly what you are carrying, and ask him to give you the rest that only he can offer, even if the circumstances stay the same for now.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, such as early in the morning before the house wakes up, or in a parked car during a lunch break. Sit down, put a hand on your chest or hold a cup of something warm, and let your body settle before you begin. Pray the longer version first if you have time, then return to the shorter one whenever the urge to quit rises again during the day.

If someone in your life is walking through a similar season, ask them to pray this prayer with you, or invite a friend or pastor to pray it over you by phone or in person. Sharing the weight with another believer often makes the next step feel possible. Write the verses you chose on a card and keep it in your wallet or on your bathroom mirror so the words are close when you need them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every tired heart give you rest that reaches deeper than your circumstances. May he steady your steps, renew your strength for the day in front of you, and remind you that you are held by a faithful God who does not grow weary of you. Go forward gently, one faithful step at a time.
