This short prayer is for the nights when your mind will not settle, when the clock keeps moving and sleep stays out of reach. Pray it in bed, sitting on the edge of the mattress, or quietly in the dark when worry is loud and you need to hand it over. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Short Prayer for Sleepless Nights

Lord, I am awake and You are not. The house is quiet, but my thoughts are not. I keep turning over the conversation from today, the bills on the kitchen counter, the email I have not answered, and the worry about tomorrow that seems to grow the longer I lie here. Be near me in this dark room. Quiet the racing in my chest and remind me that You do not slumber or sleep.

I bring You the things I cannot fix tonight. I give You my health and the health of the people I love, my work and the decisions still ahead of me, and the friend or family member I am carrying in my heart. Take what is too heavy for me to hold. Show me the next small step, and let the rest wait until morning. Let my body rest the way You designed it to rest, and let my mind follow.

Lord, I trust You with the hours between now and the sunrise. Keep watch over me while I cannot keep watch over anything. Give me sleep as a gift I did not earn, and if I am still awake, let me sense Your presence in the stillness. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am awake and worried, and I do not know what to do with it. I give You this thought, and this one, and the one after that. Hold me in the dark. Calm my heart and help me rest in Your care until morning comes. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel the urge to get up and check the clock again. Pray it as a declaration that peace is a gift from the Lord, not something you must manufacture before you are allowed to sleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

When you feel you must solve everything before you close your eyes, pray this verse as a release. Ask God to give you rest in the way He gives it to those He loves.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage when you feel alone with your anxiety. Pray that the One who keeps watch over Israel is keeping watch over you tonight, awake and attentive when you cannot be.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to Jesus in this verse. Pray it slowly, naming the specific burdens you are carrying, and ask Him to give you the rest He promised.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Let this passage guide you from worry into prayer. Turn each anxious thought into a request, and ask God to guard your heart and mind with His peace while you rest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer at the moment you realize you are awake and cannot settle. Keep a glass of water and a small notebook on the nightstand. If your mind keeps listing tasks, write them down in a few words, then read the prayer over the list and leave the paper where you can see it in the morning instead of holding it in your head.

You might also ask a trusted friend, spouse, or small group to pray this prayer for you on nights when you feel most restless. Let them know the specific concerns keeping you up so they can lift them with you. Sleep does not always come on command, but speaking your worries to God, aloud or in silence, changes how you carry them through the night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you tonight grant you rest that reaches deeper than your tired body. May His peace settle over your thoughts like a blanket over a sleeping child, and may you wake to a morning that holds more grace than you expected.
