If you are about to leave on a trip, whether a long flight, a road journey, or a visit that stirs up nerves, this list gives you Scripture to read, memorize, and pray before you go. Each group of verses addresses a different part of travel: the early hours of departure, the anxious moments in transit, the unfamiliar places you will step into, and the return home. These verses share one thread. They remind you that God goes with you, that He knows the way, and that your safety and courage rest in Him rather than in your own planning.

Verses for the Quiet Hour Before You Leave

The hours before a trip are often the busiest and most scattered. Packing lists, last-minute errands, and the nagging feeling that something has been forgotten all compete for your attention. These verses help you slow down before the car door closes or the boarding call begins.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the moment you step out the door. Before you lock up the house or turn the key in the ignition, pause and say the words of this verse aloud. Let it be the first thing you commit to the road, a reminder that your going out and your coming in are both held by the Lord.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

If your mind is racing through a checklist, this verse invites you to fix your thoughts on God rather than on everything that could go wrong. Try setting a short phrase from it as your phone lock screen or writing it on the inside of your travel folder, so that you return to it whenever the pace of departure starts to feel frantic.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Plans are useful, but no itinerary can predict every delay or detour. These verses call you to trust the Lord with the route you have mapped out and to let Him direct your steps when things change. Before you leave, name one specific plan you are holding loosely and hand it to Him in prayer.

Verses for Anxious Moments in Transit

Airports, train platforms, and highways can bring out fears you did not expect, from missed connections to turbulence to simply feeling small in a crowd. These verses are meant to be read in the middle of the journey, on a bench at the gate or in the passenger seat.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

David wrote this in a time of real danger, and it still fits the nervous traveler who feels a jolt of fear at takeoff or on a winding mountain road. Notice that the verse does not deny fear. It says what to do with it: bring it to God and trust Him. Try saying the first half aloud whenever your heart starts to race.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This verse answers fear with a promise of God’s presence and strength. When a delay leaves you stranded or a stranger’s behavior unsettles you, remember that the Lord says He is with you and will help you. Carry the verse in your mind as a steady companion during the long waiting hours.

Psalm 107:30

Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.

(WEB)

This psalm describes sailors caught in a storm who cried out to the Lord and were brought safely to harbor. Travel can feel like being tossed about, and this verse gives you language for the moment of distress and the quiet joy of arrival. Read it when you feel the ground shifting beneath you.

Verses for Unfamiliar Places and New People

A new city, a foreign language, or an unfamiliar family’s home can make you feel out of place. These verses remind you that God’s care is not limited to your home country and that He can use your trip to show kindness and grace to others.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to Israel as they faced unknown lands ahead. The promise that the Lord goes with you and will not leave you applies whether your destination is across the country or across an ocean. Before you meet strangers or navigate an unfamiliar street, speak this verse over yourself as a steadying breath.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

This passage imagines traveling to the farthest reaches of the earth and still finding God there. It is a comfort when you feel far from home or from people who know you well. Let it remind you that you are never outside the reach of His hand, even in a place where you cannot yet find your way.

Hebrews 13:2

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.

(WEB)

Travel often puts you in the position of needing hospitality. This verse encourages you to notice others as potential opportunities to show love, both as a guest and as someone who might welcome another traveler. Look for one small way to be generous to a stranger during your trip.

Verses for Returning Home Safely

The return journey brings its own mix of weariness and gratitude. These verses help you give thanks for the protection you received and ask for a safe homecoming for the people waiting for you.

Psalm 116:7

Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

(WEB)

After a trip, the psalmist’s words of rest and gratitude fit well. Traveling can leave you tired in body and mind, and this verse invites you to rest in the goodness the Lord has shown you. Read it on the drive home or in your first quiet moment back in your own space.

Psalm 100:4

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

(WEB)

Thanksgiving is a natural response to a safe journey. This verse calls you to enter God’s presence with praise. Before you unpack, take a few minutes to thank Him specifically for the people you met, the protection you felt, and the way He carried you through the unknown.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This blessing was given to Aaron and his sons to speak over the people of Israel. You can use it as a benediction over yourself and your household when you arrive home, asking the Lord to keep, favor, and give peace to those you love.

How to Use These Verses

Write three or four of these verses on a small card or in the notes app on your phone so they are with you before you leave. Choose the verses for the stage you are in now, such as departure, transit, or arrival, and read them slowly rather than rushing through the whole list at once. Keeping a few favorites visible helps them surface in the moments when your mind needs them most.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn a line into a sentence of your own, such as “Lord, I trust You with this route,” and say it when you start the car or board the plane. Returning to the same verses on each trip can also build a comforting pattern, so that the words become familiar companions rather than new worries.

A Short Prayer for Before Traveling

Lord, thank You for the journey ahead and for the people who are sending me off with their prayers. I confess that I feel some worry about what I cannot control, from the weather to the schedule to the places I have never been. Help me to hand these concerns to You and to trust that You know every step of the way. Go before me, stay beside me, and bring me home in Your good time. Let me travel with a grateful heart and a willingness to show Your kindness to the people I meet. Amen.
