This prayer is written for the day a family brings a baby before the church to be dedicated to God. It asks for blessing, protection and wisdom over the child and the parents who are raising them. You can pray it aloud exactly as written in the days before or on the morning of the service, or you can use it as a starting point and let your own words fill the gaps.

Blessings for Baby Dedications

Father, we come to you with a child in our arms and a great deal on our hearts. We thank you for the gift of this little one, who was formed in secret and known to you before the first day of life. Today we give them back to you, not because they ever belonged to us, but because we want their whole life held in your hands. Be near them when they are fussy at night, when they are learning to walk, and when they first ask who you are.

Give us wisdom as parents. Some days we will feel like we know exactly what to do, and other days we will feel like we are guessing. Keep us patient when we are tired, humble when we are wrong, and quick to ask forgiveness when we fail them. Surround our home with friends and family who love this child and who point them toward you. Let our daily choices, large and small, show them what it looks like to trust and obey you.

We ask for protection over their body, their mind and their heart, both now and in years we cannot yet see. Guard them from harm, and when hard things come, let them find you already close. Shape their character so that they grow in kindness, courage and honesty. Above all, draw them to yourself early and keep them there. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for this child. Hold them today and every day. Give us the patience and wisdom we need for the next hour, and keep our family close to you. Guard their heart, let them know your love, and help us point them to you in everything we do. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

This verse calls children a heritage from the Lord. As you pray it over this child, thank God that they are a gift entrusted to your family and not a possession to be controlled.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to help you teach your child the ways of faith from the earliest years. Pray for patience as you show them, again and again, what it means to walk with him.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This ancient blessing is spoken over people in the name of the Lord. Read it slowly over the child and imagine God’s face turned toward them with favor and peace.

Luke 2:52

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

(WEB)

Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and favor with God and man. Pray that this child would grow in the same balanced way, body, mind and spirit all developing under God’s care.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

This picture of a shepherd gently carrying the lambs speaks directly to the tenderness a new parent feels. Ask God to gather this child close and carry them through every season.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find it helpful to pray this prayer in the quiet hour before the dedication service, while the house is still and the baby is fed and resting. Sit somewhere you can see the child’s face. Holding them while you pray, or resting a hand gently on their back, turns the words into something physical and shared.

Invite a grandparent, godparent or close friend to pray it with you, each taking a paragraph. Hearing other voices ask God for the same blessings reminds you that this child is held by a whole community, not only by the two of you. Pray it again on birthdays and on the hard days when you need to remember why you started.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this little one and keep them safe in every season. May his face shine upon them and his peace settle over their home. May they grow strong in faith, gentle in heart, and confident in the love that has claimed them from the beginning.
