This prayer is for the day set aside to honor grandparents, whether you are the grandchild giving thanks, the parent helping a child give thanks, or the grandparent receiving a blessing. Pray it on Grandparents Day itself, at a family gathering, on a phone call, or in the quiet before you write a card. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for Grandparents Day

Lord, thank You for the grandparents in our lives and for the years they have given us. Thank You for the hands that held us, the stories they told, the patience they showed when we were little and the wisdom they offer now. Some of them are slowing down, and some are carrying health concerns, loneliness, or the grief of friends and spouses who are gone. Be near to them in those things. Give them strength for the ordinary days and comfort for the hard ones, and let them know they are still needed and still loved.

For those of us who are grandchildren or parents, help us to notice what we have been given. Make us slow to take people for granted and quick to pick up the phone, write the note, or sit with them for an afternoon. Teach us to ask good questions and to listen to the answers. If there is distance, forgiveness to be offered, or old hurt that has never been spoken, give us the courage to take the next honest step toward peace. Bless the time we spend together today, and let each of us leave it a little more grateful than we came. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank You for the grandparents who have shaped us. Thank You for their faithfulness, their prayers, and the love they have shown across the years. Be with them today. Give them rest, joy, and a sense of being cherished. Help us to honor them with our words and our time, and to keep their stories alive for the children coming after us. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 71:18

Yes, even when I am old and gray-haired, God, don’t forsake me, until I have declared your strength to the next generation, your might to everyone who is to come.

(WEB)

Pray this for grandparents who feel their best years are behind them. Ask God to keep them useful and to let them keep telling of His faithfulness to the next generation.

Proverbs 16:31

Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is attained by a life of righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this as a thanksgiving for the grey hair and weathered faces in your family. Ask God to help you see the years they have lived as a crown of honor rather than a sign of decline.

Deuteronomy 5:16

“Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

(WEB)

Pray this for the grandchildren and parents in your family. Ask God to shape our hearts toward honoring the older generation, with respect in our words and care in our actions.

2 Timothy 1:5

Having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you; which lived first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in you also.

(WEB)

Pray this for the faith that has been passed down through your family line. Thank God for the grandmothers and grandfathers whose quiet trust became a legacy you now carry.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Pray this as you spend time with the older people you love. Ask God to teach all of you to number your days well, so that visits and conversations are held with gratitude and not postponed.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment on Grandparents Day, perhaps early in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening after the dishes are done. If you can, sit near a photograph of your grandparents or a keepsake they gave you, and let your hands rest on it or hold it while you pray. Reading the prayer slowly, one paragraph at a time, helps the words settle into the heart rather than rushing past.

You can also invite others to pray with you. Read the prayer aloud at a family meal, with grandchildren taking turns reading the lines or adding a name of someone they are thankful for. If your grandparents are able, pray it together with them, or ask them to pray the blessing over you in return. Some families write the prayer on a card and tuck it into a gift or a letter for a grandparent who cannot be there in person.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the grandparents in your life with peace in their days, strength for their bodies, and joy in the company of those they love. May He let them see the fruit of their labor in the lives of their children and grandchildren. And may you, too, feel the warmth of His care as you honor them today.
