These short prayers for New Year’s Day are written for the first hours of a new year, when the calendar feels full of blank pages and the mind is already making lists. You can pray them early in the morning before the house wakes up, at midnight as the old year closes, or during a quiet walk on the first afternoon. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Short Prayers for New Year’s Day
Lord, I come to you at the start of this year with open hands. I am grateful for the year behind me, including the good days I did not earn and the hard days I survived with your help. I do not know what the next twelve months will hold. Some of it I am looking forward to, and some of it I am quietly dreading, whether that is a job decision, a health question, a relationship that needs mending, or a child who is growing up faster than I can keep up with.
Be near to me in the planning and in the unknown. Keep me from pretending I can control what only you can hold. Show me the one or two things you want me to focus on, and give me the patience to leave the rest in your care. Where I have failed you or others, forgive me, and help me begin again without shame. Make this year a year in which I grow closer to you, not just busier. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, this is a new year and I am starting it with you. Thank you for carrying me through the last one. I give you my plans, my fears, and the people I love. Teach me to walk one day at a time, and let me see your faithfulness in the small things. Help me to trust you more than I trust my own certainty. Amen.

Pray this when old regrets or past failures want to follow you into the new year. Ask God to help you press forward toward the goal he has set before you.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray the main prayer on the morning of January 1, before checking phones or reading the news. Sit in a chair near a window if you can, with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, so your body settles while your mind slows down. If you are praying at midnight, you might step outside for a minute and breathe the cold air as you give the old year to God.
You can also pray this with someone else. A spouse, a close friend, or your family at the kitchen table can take turns reading a line each. Writing the prayer on a card and placing it somewhere you will see it, such as on the bathroom mirror or inside a planner, lets you return to it in the weeks ahead when the year starts to feel crowded again.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who has brought you through the last year go before you into this one. May his grace meet you each morning, his peace guard your heart, and his faithfulness steady your steps. May you walk in the light of his presence all year long.
