These Christian prayers for Pentecost give you words to pray on the feast that marks the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early church, a day many believers observe on the fiftieth day after Easter. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Christian Prayers for Pentecost

Holy Spirit, you came with wind and fire to the believers gathered in Jerusalem, and you have never stopped coming to people who ask. Today I ask you to come to me. I am tired of trying to do the work of faith by my own strength, and some mornings I wake up already wishing I were someone else. Fill the places where I feel empty, and show me where I have been running on fumes instead of on you.

Give me courage to speak the truth about you when it would be easier to stay quiet. Let my words be gentle and clear, and let the people around me see something of your patience and joy in the way I treat them, especially the ones who are hard to love. Give me wisdom for the decisions waiting on my desk and in my heart, and help me hear your voice above the noise of my own worry. Make my home, my work and my friendships places where your presence is felt. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Come, Holy Spirit, into this moment. Breathe on what feels dry in me and give me the words I need, whether for a conversation, a decision or a hard hour. Make me brave, make me kind, and remind me that I am not doing this alone. Thank you for being with me now as surely as you were with the first disciples. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Acts 2:1-4

1 Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

Read this passage slowly before you pray, and picture the upper room where the believers were gathered. Ask the Spirit to fill you in the same way, not as a feeling you must produce but as a gift you receive.

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking Jesus that the Spirit is given as Teacher and Helper. Ask the Spirit to remind you of what Christ has said, especially when you feel forgetful or uncertain.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

When you do not know what to say, this verse tells you the Spirit helps with your weakness. Let that be your prayer on days when words feel impossible.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray this passage by naming one fruit you most lack, such as patience or self-control, and asking the Spirit to grow it in you over the coming weeks.

Ezekiel 36:26

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

Use this verse to ask God for a softer heart, one that responds to his leading with willingness. Pray it as a request for real change, not just a pleasant thought.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray on Pentecost morning before the day fills up, sitting at a kitchen table with a cup of coffee and this page open beside them. If you are in a church community, you could read the main prayer aloud together in the service or at a small group, with each person adding one sentence of their own at the end.

You might also pray the shorter version while walking, driving or waiting in line, letting the words settle into your breathing. If someone in your family or circle is struggling to believe God is near, pray the main prayer on their behalf, changing the first person to their name and asking the Spirit to meet them where they are.

A Blessing to Close

May the Spirit who came with wind and fire fill your life with a steady, quiet peace. May the Lord give you the words you need, the courage to speak them, and the patience to wait when the answer is slow in coming. Go in the strength of the one who has never left you.
