This page gives you Bible verses and short prayers for birthdays, whether you are celebrating your own, marking a child’s or spouse’s, or remembering someone who has passed on. The verses are grouped by mood, from quiet thanks for another year to hope for the year ahead. Each one comes with a reflection and a simple way to carry it through the day.

Verses of Thanks for Another Year

Birthdays invite us to look back and notice how far God has carried us. These verses ground gratitude in the steady character of the Lord rather than in the milestone itself. Read them slowly before the candles, the cake, or the first phone call of the day.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This verse sets the tone for the whole day. Before you check messages or make plans, say aloud one thing about this day you did not earn and did not expect. Let that become the first gift you open.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Moses asks God to teach us to count our days so we may gain a wise heart. A birthday is a natural moment to do that. Take five minutes with a notebook and write down what this past year taught you about wisdom.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses were written from the ruins of Jerusalem, yet they name God’s mercies as new every morning. If this birthday came in a hard season, remember that the same faithfulness meets you tomorrow. Name one mercy you have seen this year and thank God for it.

Verses for Hope and the Year Ahead

Many people feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty as a new year begins. These verses point toward God’s plans and presence rather than toward a guaranteed outcome. They work well as a birthday prayer for yourself or for someone you love who is stepping into something new.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God spoke these words to exiles who had lost almost everything. Read it as a promise about God’s intention for your life, not a promise about any particular result. Write it on a card and place it where you will see it on the first morning of the new year.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God calls the people to stop dwelling on the past and watch for what he is doing. A birthday can be a fresh start in a small, honest way. Consider one habit or relationship you want to approach differently, and ask God to show you where to begin.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Trust is easier to say on a birthday than to live out in an ordinary Tuesday. These verses call you to lean on God and not only on your own understanding. Pick one decision you are facing this year and bring it to God before you decide.

Verses for Blessing Someone Else on Their Birthday

A birthday card or a spoken blessing can carry Scripture to someone you love. These verses are well suited to a child, a friend, a parent, or a spouse. They speak to protection, peace, and the faithfulness that continues beyond one day.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the priestly blessing God gave Aaron to speak over the people. It is a complete prayer in three short lines. Say it over the person whose birthday it is, looking at them as you speak, and let the words do their own work.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The psalmist names God as the keeper who watches over coming and going. This makes a fitting verse for someone starting a new year of travel, work, or change. Write it in a card along with one specific way you will pray for them this year.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God who began a good work will carry it on to completion. Use this with someone whose growth you have watched over time. Tell them one thing you have seen God doing in their life so far.

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…

(WEB)

God is able to do far more than we ask or imagine. This verse stretches a birthday wish beyond the ordinary. When you write a message, add a line asking God to surprise them in ways they have not yet thought to hope for.

Verses for Remembering Someone on Their Birthday

When a birthday falls after a loss, the day can bring grief as well as memory. These verses offer comfort without rushing past sorrow. They hold together the reality of loss and the promise of God’s presence.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. On a painful anniversary, this verse reminds you that you do not have to pretend the day is easy. Spend part of the day telling God honestly how much you miss the person.

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to Martha at the tomb of her brother. They point to resurrection life, which goes beyond any calendar. Read them quietly, perhaps while looking at an old photograph or lighting a candle in memory.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Paul describes God as the Father of mercies who comforts us so we can comfort others. If you are remembering someone today, consider reaching out to another person who is grieving, and let God’s comfort move through you.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that fit the person whose birthday it is, rather than trying to read all fifteen at once. Write them in a birthday card, on a sticky note under a cake plate, or in a text message sent early in the morning. A handwritten verse often gets read again later in the day.

For prayer, read the verse aloud, pause for a minute of silence, and then speak one sentence back to God about what it means for the person. Return to the same verse on the next birthday to see how God has answered in the meantime. Repetition over years builds a quiet record of faithfulness.

A Short Prayer for Birthdays

Lord, thank you for the gift of another year. You have been faithful through every season I have lived, including the ones I did not understand. Today I ask you to help me number my days and receive them with a grateful heart. Keep me honest about what matters most, and give me courage to live this year close to you. Where I feel uncertain, remind me that you hold the future. Be near to anyone who is missing someone today, and let your comfort reach them. I trust you with what comes next. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord bless you and keep you on this day and in the year that follows. May he make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May he lift up his countenance and give you peace. May you grow in wisdom, in joy, and in the knowledge of his love. Happy birthday, and may God’s goodness go before you.
