These short prayers are written for people who have recently come to faith in Jesus, or who are just beginning to follow him after years of wondering what it means. Pray them in the morning before the day gets loud, in the car before a hard conversation, or at night when you are trying to make sense of what has changed. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for New Believers

Lord, I am new to this, and some days I do not know what I am doing. I want to know you more, but I am not sure how to read my Bible, how to pray without feeling silly, or how to find people who will walk with me. Teach me the basics, one step at a time. Help me find a church or a small group where I can ask honest questions and not feel judged for the ones I do not know how to ask yet.

Be near me when old habits pull at me and when people I love do not understand why I have changed. Give me patience with myself when I fail, and remind me that failing does not mean I have been abandoned. Let my words and choices start to show that I belong to you, even in small ways that no one else notices. Keep my heart soft toward you and open to the work you are doing. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am still learning how to follow you, and I need you today. Help me trust you with what I do not understand. Show me one small step to take, and give me the courage to take it. Be with the people I am closest to and help me love them well. Thank you for welcoming me, even while I am still learning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

When you are new, the Bible can feel like a locked room. Pray this verse before you open it, asking God to make his word a lamp for the next step, not a whole map of the road ahead.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel behind everyone else. Thank God that the work he started in you is his responsibility to finish, and ask him to help you rest in that promise.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are tempted to figure everything out by yourself. Ask God to help you lean on him instead of your own understanding, especially in decisions you are not sure about.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you worry that your past or your mistakes have put you outside God’s reach. Pray it back to him as a declaration that nothing can separate you from his love.

John 15:5

I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel you must produce growth on your own. Ask God to keep you connected to Jesus, trusting that fruit grows out of that connection rather than out of pressure.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that is yours alone, even if it is only five minutes before the kids wake up or during your lunch break in the car. Sit somewhere quiet, and keep a notebook nearby so you can write down any question or fear that surfaces while you pray. Reading the prayer slowly, one paragraph at a time, helps it sink in more than rushing through it.

You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a mature believer you trust to pray it with you, or share it with a friend who is also new to faith. Some people like to pray a single line each morning for a week and notice how their words grow over time. Let the prayer be a starting point for your own honest conversation with God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who began a good work in this new believer keep them steady through every season of learning. May he guide each step, quiet each fear, and surround them with people who will encourage their faith. May they know, every day, that they are loved and welcomed by the One who called them home.
