This is a Christian prayer for a caregiver, someone who spends their days and often their nights looking after a spouse, parent, child or friend who cannot fully look after themselves. Pray it at the start of a shift of care, late at night when the house is quiet, or in the car before you walk back through the door. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit better.
Christian Prayer for a Caregiver
Lord, you see the person I am caring for, and you see me. You know the medication times I keep in my head, the appointments I rearrange, the bills I stay awake over, and the small tasks that no one else notices: the cup of water, the clean sheets, the careful lifting from bed to chair. Thank you that none of it is hidden from you. When I feel invisible in this work, remind me that you are watching over both of us with steady attention.
I am tired, Father, and some days I am short with the people I love most. I am grieving the life we used to have and sometimes resent the hours that have been taken from me. Forgive me for the impatience and the self-pity. Give me patience that is larger than my own strength, and show me where I can rest without guilt. Send me help in the form of a neighbor, a friend, a nurse, or a few hours of respite that I did not think I could accept.
Give me wisdom for the decisions I face, and courage to ask for help when I need it. Keep my own health in your care, because I cannot pour out what I have not been given. Let the person I care for feel your nearness through my hands and my voice. And when the day ends and I have nothing left to give, let me rest in the truth that you are still at work, carrying what I cannot carry. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am stretched thin right now. Be my strength for the next task and my calm for the next hard moment. Help me see the one I care for as you see them, with dignity and worth. Give me enough grace for this hour, and trust me with the rest of the day. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment in your day, such as the first cup of coffee before the household wakes or the minutes after the last medication is given. Keep a small card with the shorter version in your pocket, or save it on your phone, so you can pray it while you wait in a pharmacy line or sit in a parked car between errands. Doing this with your hands busy, folding laundry or washing a dish, can help the words settle into your body rather than floating past you.
Consider asking a trusted friend, pastor or family member to pray this prayer with you by phone or in person once a week. Ask them to pray for the person you care for as well as for you. Many caregivers find that hearing a loved one speak these words aloud brings a relief that silent prayer alone does not always give.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who sees every hidden act of love give you strength for each hour and rest for each night. May he protect your heart from bitterness and your body from exhaustion, and may he bring people alongside you who lighten the load. May you know that your faithful care is never wasted in his sight.
