A bedtime prayer for a family member is a way to hand that person to God at the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the worries have had their chance to grow. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are dimming, whether you are sitting on the edge of a child’s bed, lying beside a spouse, or keeping watch over an aging parent from a chair in the next room. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.

Bedtime Prayer for a Family Member

Lord, as this day comes to an end, I bring you the one I love most in this house. You know the hours they spent at school or at work, the conversations that went well and the ones that did not, the tiredness they carried home without telling anyone. Thank you for every good moment of today, the small laughs, the meal eaten together, the kindness they showed without expecting thanks. Thank you for being near them when I could not be.

Now I release them to you. Quiet the thoughts that circle in their mind as they lie down, the replaying of what was said, the list of what still needs doing tomorrow. Where they are anxious about money, health, friendships or the future, give them rest that does not depend on having every answer. Guard their sleep, Father, and keep watch over them through the dark hours when I cannot see them. Let them wake refreshed and ready to meet a new morning with you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you are awake while we sleep. I place my family member in your hands tonight. Calm their heart, steady their breathing, and remind them that you are near. Watch over them until morning and let them rest in your care. Thank you for today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse over your family member as a statement of trust. Ask God to give them the kind of settled sleep that comes from knowing they are not alone in the dark.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure your family member feels to keep working and worrying. Thank God that rest is a gift he gives to those he loves.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Speak this over the night ahead, asking God to keep your family member from harm while they sleep. Let the image of a watchful Keeper steady your own fears too.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring to mind the burdens your family member carried today, whether visible or hidden. Ask Jesus to meet them there and lighten what they cannot carry alone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pray this passage for a family member who tends to lie awake worrying. Ask that the peace of God would guard their heart and mind as they fall asleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as after brushing teeth or after the last light is switched off, so the prayer becomes a settled part of your evening. If you are praying with a child, let them hold a favorite blanket or stuffed animal while you speak, and invite them to add their own thank you at the end. If the person is an adult in another room or another city, a phone call or text can carry the same words, and many families find it meaningful to pray the same prayer at the same hour even when they are apart.

Your hands can help the prayer settle. Rest one hand on a shoulder, a back, or the bedpost, or hold a photograph of your family member while you speak. Consider inviting a spouse, grandparent, or friend to pray the shorter version aloud with you, so that the family member is carried by more than one voice each night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless you with restful sleep and keep you safe through the night. May his peace settle over your heart and over the heart of the one you love. As the day closes, may you wake to a morning full of his mercy.
