This daily prayer for a family member is written for the person you love who is far from easy to carry in your heart, whether that is a child, a parent, a spouse, a sibling, or someone who has drifted from the faith. You can pray it in the morning before the house wakes up or in the evening as the day settles. Read it aloud exactly as written, or let it become a starting point and put their names and concerns in your own words.

Daily Prayer for a Family Member

Lord, I bring before you the person I love today. You know them better than I ever will. You know the worries that keep them awake, the hopes they have not yet spoken aloud, and the mistakes they are trying to forgive themselves for. I ask that you would go before them into this day, into the rooms they will walk through and the conversations they will have, and that your presence would meet them there before I do.

Protect them from harm that I cannot see. Guard their health, their work, and their safety on the road. Where they are tired, give them rest. Where they are afraid, give them courage that does not depend on how they feel. Where they have stopped trusting you, let them sense that you have not stopped trusting them, and help them come back to you at their own pace, without shame.

Father, I also ask for myself. Make me patient when I want to fix everything, gentle when I want to correct, and honest about my own needs so that I do not lean on them in ways that are unfair. Let my love for them point them toward you and not toward me. Keep our relationship warm and whole, even on the days when we misunderstand each other. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you see [name] right now, in whatever they are facing. Hold them close and steady their steps. Remind them that they are loved and that you are near. Give me the words to pray for them, and when I cannot find words, let your Spirit pray on their behalf. Keep them safe and bring them home to you in your time. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over your family member as a promise of protection that reaches into their going out and their coming in. Ask God to keep them in every ordinary movement of the day, from the drive to work to the walk back home.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When your loved one is anxious, read this slowly and name their worries one by one in prayer. Ask that the peace of God would stand guard over their heart and mind, even before the situation changes.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This blessing was given to be spoken over others. Speak it over your family member by name, asking the Lord to keep them, to turn his face toward them, and to grant them peace that lasts through the day.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your loved one cannot see a future. Pray that God’s plans for them would become clearer over time, and that they would trust his purposes even while the path ahead looks uncertain.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Some days you will not know what to pray for them. This verse reminds you that the Spirit helps in weakness. Ask him to pray through you, filling the silence with the groanings of a heart that cares deeply.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as while the coffee brews, during a short walk, or in the car before you go inside. Keep a small card or a note on your phone with their name and the two or three concerns you most want to bring to God. Praying with your hands busy, by folding laundry or washing dishes, can help your thoughts stay focused and gentle.

Consider inviting another person who loves them to pray the same words, or to pray them on their own days. Some families find it meaningful to keep a shared list and to pray through it together once a week. However you pray, return to this prayer even on the days that feel dry, because God hears faithful repetition as surely as eloquent words.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless [name] and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May they feel the nearness of God in every hour of this day, and may they rest in the knowledge that they are known, loved, and held.
