This short prayer for a family member is written for the moments when you want to lift someone you love to God but do not know where to begin. It works well in the morning before the house wakes, in the car before a hard conversation, or at the bedside of someone who is struggling. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for a Family Member

Father, I bring to You the person I love most in my family today. You know their name, their history, and every place where they are hurting or afraid. You know the worries they have not told anyone, the decisions sitting heavy on their shoulders, and the quiet hopes they hold onto. I ask that You would meet them there and make Your presence real in their ordinary hours, at work, at the kitchen table, and in the late-night thoughts that keep them awake.

Give them strength for what is in front of them and wisdom for the choices they have to make. Where there is tension between us, soften hearts on every side, including mine. Where there is distance, bring words of reconciliation and patience. Protect their body, their mind, and their faith, and let them feel Your nearness even when they cannot explain what they are feeling. Remind them that they are not carrying any of this alone.

Thank You for the gift they are to me and for the years we have shared. Help me love them well, speak kindly, and trust You with what I cannot fix. Let my prayers be a steady presence in their life, even when they do not know I am praying. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up my family member to You right now. You see where they are and what they need before I can name it. Hold them close, give them peace in this moment, and let them know they are loved by You and by me. Guide the next step they take and keep them in Your care. Thank You that You are already at work in their life. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

Speak this blessing over your family member as a prayer for God to keep, shine on, and be gracious to them. It is a good verse to read slowly, pausing after each line to ask God to do what it describes.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your family member as you think about their comings and goings. Ask the Lord to guard their going out and coming in, today and in the days ahead.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your family member is anxious. Bring their specific worries to God with thanksgiving, and ask that the peace of God would guard their heart and mind.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this promise for a family member who feels afraid or discouraged. Ask God to remind them that He is with them and will strengthen them when they feel weak.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this for a family member who fears being cut off from God or from those who love them. Ask that they would rest in the assurance that nothing can separate them from His love.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time to pray for your family member, such as while you drive, as you make coffee, or just before bed. Keep a small note with their name and the current need so you can return to it each day. If you can, hold something in your hands, like a cup, a ring, or a photograph, to keep your attention gentle and focused on them.

Invite others to pray with you. A spouse, a friend, or a small group can carry the same request and remind you to check in with the person you are praying for. Tell your family member you are praying for them, if that feels right, and let them know the specific ways you are lifting them up. Sometimes that simple word of care opens the door to honest conversation.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your family member and keep them safe in every season. May He make His face shine upon them and give them grace for each day. May they know, deep in their heart, that they are loved, held, and never forgotten by the One who made them.
