This short morning prayer is for anyone who wants to start the day with a thankful heart instead of a list of worries. It is written to be prayed before the first meeting, the first text message, or the first complaint about the weather, and it can be read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for your own words. Pray it slowly, and let each line turn your attention toward what God has already given.

Short Morning Prayer for a Grateful Heart

Lord, thank you for this morning. Before I reach for my phone or think about the work waiting for me, I want to notice that I woke up, that my lungs filled with air, and that you kept me through the night. Thank you for the cup of coffee, the light at the window, and the people who will cross my path today, the coworker who is tired, the child who needs a ride, the neighbor I have not spoken to in weeks. Help me see them as gifts to receive and not as problems to manage.

I bring you the things that are already pressing on me. I am anxious about the deadline, the money I have not yet sorted out, and the conversation I have been dreading. Teach me to set those worries down in your presence and to trust that you see every detail of my day. Fill the places where complaint usually starts with gratitude, and let my first words to the people I love be kind. Keep my eyes open to the small mercies I would otherwise miss. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for this new day and for the breath in my body. Thank you for the people I will see, even the difficult ones, and for the work you have placed in my hands. Help me notice your goodness before I notice what is wrong. Let gratitude lead my thoughts, and let it shape the way I speak and listen today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This verse names the day itself as something the Lord has made. Pray it when you feel tempted to dread the hours ahead, and ask him to help you receive this particular day as a gift rather than a burden.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah wrote these lines in the middle of ruin, and they still hold. Pray them when yesterday’s failures feel heavy, trusting that God’s mercies are fresh every morning.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Paul ties thanksgiving to the will of God rather than to ideal circumstances. Pray this verse by asking God to show you one specific thing to thank him for in the next hour, however ordinary it seems.

Psalm 90:14

Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

(WEB)

This prayer asks God to satisfy us with his steadfast love in the morning so that we may rejoice all our days. Pray it as a request for a heart that begins each day already anchored in his love rather than in its own strength.

Colossians 3:17

Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.

(WEB)

Paul asks that everything we do, in word or deed, be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, with thanks. Pray this as you plan your day, asking God to let gratitude shape both what you say and what you do.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer before you check your messages or get out of bed if you can. A chair by a window, a cup of something warm in your hands, or a short walk to the kitchen can all help you slow down long enough to mean the words. If your mornings are chaotic, keep the shorter version on a sticky note by the sink or on your phone’s lock screen, and read it while the kettle boils.

You might also pray this prayer with someone who shares your home or your work. A spouse, a roommate, or a friend on the phone can take turns reading a line each, so that the gratitude is shared out loud before the day pulls you in different directions. Ask one another what each person is looking forward to, and let that become the first thing you thank God for together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you in every conversation. May he open your eyes to the goodness already around you and steady your heart when the hours grow long. May you be grateful for what is given and trusting in what is still to come.
