This bedtime prayer for a loved one is written to be prayed in the evening, once the day has wound down and the house has gone quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into each part. Either way, it gives you a way to hand a person you care about into God’s keeping before you sleep.

Bedtime Prayer for a Loved One

Father, thank You for the day that is now ending. You saw every hour of it, the hard conversations, the small kindnesses, the worries that kept coming back. Right now I bring my loved one to You. You know the things they carried today that I could not see, and You know what tomorrow holds. Quiet their mind where it is racing. Loosen the grip of whatever they are afraid of, and remind them that they do not have to hold it all together alone.

Watch over their rest tonight. Give them sleep that is deep and not restless, and let their body feel safe enough to let go. If there is pain, sickness, or a sleepless stretch ahead, be near them in it. If they are far from home, or lying awake with a decision that keeps circling, let them sense Your presence in the dark. Guard their going out and their coming in, and keep every door of their life closed to what would harm them.

Thank You for the gift of this person. Thank You for the ways they have blessed me and the ways they are still growing. Let them wake to a morning that feels like a fresh start, and let them know, when they open their eyes, that Your mercies are new again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I give you the one I love tonight. Settle their heart and quiet their thoughts. Guard their sleep, protect them from what they cannot see, and be the peace they rest in. Let them wake knowing You have been near all night. Amen.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Pray this passage as an invitation for your loved one to bring every anxious thought to God in prayer. Ask that the peace of God would guard their heart and mind through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time in the evening, perhaps just after you have turned off the lights or as you sit on the edge of their bed or stand in the hallway outside their door. If you live together, a short prayer spoken softly over them is a tender way to close the day. If you are apart, pray at the same hour you would normally be saying goodnight, and let that shared moment become a rhythm you both recognize.

Keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a folded blanket, a cup of tea, or the phone with their photo on the screen. Let your hands remind you that this is a prayer for a real person with real needs. You can invite another friend or family member to pray the same words at the same hour, so that your loved one is covered by more than one set of prayers every night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch never slumber over you tonight. May His peace settle on your heart like a warm blanket, and may you wake refreshed, held, and loved. Rest well, dear one, for God is faithful through the whole of the night.
