This daily prayer for a new year is for the start of January, or any morning when you want to hand the year ahead to God before the calendar fills up. Pray it first thing, while the house is quiet and before the day’s noise begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words wherever your heart needs more room.

Daily Prayer for a New Year

Lord, another year is opening in front of me, and I feel both hope and a small knot of worry about what it will hold. I don’t know what the next twelve months will bring: the work I’ll be asked to do, the people I’ll love or lose, the health of those I care about, the bills, the decisions I keep putting off. Thank you that none of it is a surprise to you. You have already been in every month of this year, and you are not waiting for me to figure it out before you act.

Help me start this day with open hands instead of a clenched fist. Show me what matters most so I can give my time and energy to it, and loosen my grip on the things I can’t control. Where I am anxious about money, relationships, or my own failings, remind me that you are faithful even when I am not. Give me patience with myself on the days I fall short, and gentleness toward the people around me who are carrying their own burdens. Keep me honest, keep me kind, and keep me close to you. Be my steady ground through the ordinary days and the hard ones alike, and let this year be one in which I learn to trust you a little more. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, this is a new year and I give it to you. Go ahead of me into every day, and help me take the next step with trust rather than dread. Guard my heart from worry and my mind from the pressure to plan everything perfectly. Let me be faithful in small things and reliant on you in large ones. Thank you that you are with me in this year as surely as you were in the last. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn this passage into a prayer whenever a new worry rises. Bring the specific concern to God with thanksgiving, and ask him to guard your heart and mind with his peace.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time each morning, even if it is only five minutes before the coffee is ready. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps by a window or at the kitchen table with a cup in your hands. Holding something warm can help your body settle while your mind is still racing ahead to the day’s list. Keep a notebook nearby so you can jot down any worry or hope that surfaces while you pray, and return to those notes later in the week.

This prayer also works well when it is shared. A spouse, a close friend, or a small group can take turns reading it aloud at the start of the year, and each person can add a line about their own concerns. Praying it together can make the year feel less like something you face alone and more like a journey carried by several hands.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this new year and walk beside you through every season of it. May he steady your steps when the path is unclear and fill your days with a quiet, unshakable peace. May you know that you are loved, seen, and held, today and in all the months that follow.
