This short prayer is for a nurse, whether you are the nurse yourself, a family member, or a friend who wants to lift someone on a long shift to God. It works well at the start of a shift, during a break, on the drive home, or late at night when the day’s weight is still on your shoulders. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for a Nurse

Lord, you see the nurse who has been on her feet since before dawn. You know the weight of the charts, the call lights, the families who are frightened, and the patients who cannot tell her how they feel. Give her steady hands and a clear mind for every task in front of her. Where she is tired, renew her strength. Where her patience is thin, fill the gap with your own gentleness, so that she can speak kindly even when the night is long.

Father, protect her from carelessness and from the kind of fear that makes decisions in a rush. Let her trust the training you have given her and the wisdom of the people working beside her. When a patient is hard to comfort or a loss comes too close to home, be near her and remind her that she does not carry it alone. Guard her body, her sleep, and her family at home. Let her go to bed knowing she did good work in your sight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, be with this nurse right now. Steady her hands, sharpen her mind, and give her patience for the next patient and the one after that. Keep her safe on her feet and in her heart. Help her feel your presence in the middle of the noise. Remind her that you see every person she cares for, and that you see her too. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over a nurse who feels spent at the end of a long shift. Ask God to give the strength that does not come from her own reserves, especially when she has nothing left to give.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this passage when a nurse is about to drive home after a hard night. Ask God to keep her going out and coming in, both on the road and through the hours she spends caring for others.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this for a nurse who is weary of doing good without seeing much result. Ask God to keep her from giving up and to remind her that faithful, unseen care matters to him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to a nurse carrying anxiety about her patients or her workload. Pray that she would hand her worries to God in prayer and receive a calm that the busy ward cannot take away.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Pray this when a nurse feels that her small acts of care go unnoticed. Ask God to help her see that every kindness shown to a patient is also an act of love offered to Christ.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it at the start of a shift, while the nurse is still in the locker room or walking down the corridor, before the first alarm sounds. If you are praying for someone else, text them the words or read them over the phone during a lunch break. A quiet moment with the hands folded or resting on a steering wheel is enough.

Invite others to pray with you. A spouse, a parish group, or a prayer partner can take turns speaking a line each. Keep a copy somewhere the nurse will see it, such as in a bag, on a fridge, or saved on a phone, so the words are ready for the next hard day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every patient also see the one who cares for them. May he steady her hands, rest her heart, and meet her in the quiet hours after the work is done. May she know, deeply and today, that she is held and that her labor is not in vain.
