This night prayer is for anyone who lies down with a mind still running through the day’s worries, unfinished conversations, and tomorrow’s list. Pray it in the evening, after the lights go low and before you close your eyes. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Night Prayer for a Peaceful Heart

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to You as it is. I bring the things I got right and the things I handled badly, the words I wish I had not said and the ones I wish I had. I bring the worries that followed me to bed: money, health, the people I love, the work I could not finish. Take them from my hands, because I cannot carry them through the night and still rest.

Quiet my thoughts. When my mind starts replaying conversations or rehearsing tomorrow, call me back to this moment, to the breath I am taking now and to Your presence in the room. Settle my body so it can let go, and settle my heart so it stops bracing for what might go wrong. Watch over the people I love while they sleep, and keep my home safe from every harm.

Thank You for the gifts of this day, even the small ones: a warm meal, a kind word, a moment of laughter, the ordinary mercies I did not earn. I give You my fears and my gratitude together, and I trust that You are awake when I am not. Let me sleep in Your peace, and wake in Your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind will not slow down. I give You what I could not finish today and what I am afraid of tomorrow. Take the weight from my chest and quiet the noise in my head. Keep my family safe tonight, and let me rest in knowing You are watching over all of us. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase remind you that rest is a gift God gives, not a reward you must earn by finishing everything first. Repeat it when your thoughts drift back to the day.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse names the anxious labor of trying to hold everything together. Pray it as an admission that you are not the one who keeps the world running, and ask God to take over what you cannot control.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every worry to God in prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart. Use this passage to name your specific worries one by one, handing each to God before you sleep.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse ties peace to a mind that rests on God. As you pray it, bring your attention back to Him each time your thoughts wander, treating each return as a small act of trust.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks directly to the weary and burdened. Pray this verse as a personal invitation, letting yourself set down the day’s heaviness and accept the rest He offers.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent place and time, such as your bed after the lights are off or a chair beside the window before you brush your teeth. Some people find it helps to hold something in their hands while they pray, like a smooth stone, a folded note, or their own wrist, so the body has something to anchor to while the mind slows down. Pray slowly, pausing after each sentence, and let silence do part of the work.

If you share a home, consider praying this together with a spouse, a child, or a roommate, taking turns reading a line each. You can also pray it on behalf of someone who is struggling to sleep, speaking their name into the prayer and asking God to give them the same peace. Keep a notebook nearby if your mind keeps producing thoughts, and write them down so you can pray them over rather than carry them to sleep.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over His people keep you tonight. May He calm every restless thought and steady your heart in His love. May you sleep without fear and wake to find His mercy new again. Rest well, knowing you are held.
