This evening prayer is for the end of the day, when your mind is still busy and you want to hand the night to God. Pray it just before you turn out the light, or in bed with your phone set aside. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where something more specific sits on your heart.

Evening Prayer for a Restful Night

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank you for those moments. Some of it was heavy, and some of it I would like to do over. I set those things down now and ask you to take what I cannot carry. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me rest in the grace that meets me in my failures.

Quiet my thoughts, Father. I know the list will try to start again: the conversation I need to have tomorrow, the bills, the worry about someone I love who is struggling. Let each one wait at the door until morning. Calm my body so that my shoulders can drop and my breathing can slow. Be near to anyone awake in my house tonight, and keep watch over those who are far from me and afraid.

Thank you that you do not sleep and you do not grow weary. I can close my eyes because you are awake. Guard my home and the people in it through the dark hours, and wake me in the morning with a fresh mercy I did not earn. Let me sleep in peace and trust you with what I cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind will not stop. I give you the day and the worries I have carried since morning. Settle my heart and quiet my thoughts. Keep my family safe through the night, and let me wake to your faithfulness again. I rest in you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a statement of trust you can make out loud. When you feel unsafe or alone, say it slowly and let the word “alone” meet the word “safely.” It turns your fear into a sentence addressed to God.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that the work of the day does not have to be finished by your own strain. Pray it as you lay down unfinished tasks, asking God to be the one who provides when you stop.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask for protection over the people you love while they sleep. Pray it for a child, a spouse, or a parent, naming them as you speak the words of watchfulness.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to Jesus in this prayer. Name the specific burden you are carrying tonight, and tell him you are placing it in his hands rather than picking it up again at dawn.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when the day has been hard and you are not sure tomorrow will be better. Let the morning be the thing you look forward to, trusting that God’s faithfulness will be new again when you wake.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time about fifteen minutes before you intend to sleep, so your prayer is not rushed or squeezed in as you fall asleep mid-sentence. Sit on the edge of the bed or stay in your favorite chair, with the lamp dimmed and your phone face down. A simple physical gesture helps: open your hands in your lap while you pray, and let them rest palms up as you hand over the day.

If you share a home, invite someone to pray it with you, or read it aloud to a child before bed and let them add a line of their own. Parents, spouses, and friends can also pray the shorter version over one another as a quiet blessing before the lights go out.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he calm what is restless in you, and may you wake to a morning that is kinder than the night before. Rest well, and know that you are held.
