This simple prayer for a restful night is for the end of the day, when the to-do list is still open, the conversations keep replaying, and your body is tired but your mind will not settle. Pray it at bedtime, lying down or sitting on the edge of the bed, before you turn off the light. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries into your own words.

Simple Prayer for a Restful Night

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day. Thank you for the hours behind me, the good moments and the hard ones alike. You were with me in them. Now I set down what I carried today: the unfinished work, the message I have not answered, the words I wish I had said differently. I hand each one to you, and I ask you to take what I cannot fix tonight.

Quiet my thoughts, Father. When my mind starts running ahead to tomorrow, bring me back to this moment and to what is true right now: you are awake, and I am held. Ease the tightness in my shoulders and the restlessness in my chest. Be near to the people I love, the ones who are sick, the ones who are far away, and the ones who are lying awake too. Keep watch over my home and my sleep, and guard me from fear in the dark. Let my body rest and let my heart trust you with the morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind will not stop. Take my worries for tonight and give me rest. Hold the people I love and keep them safe. I trust you with what I could not finish today and with what tomorrow brings. Let me sleep in your peace. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before you close your eyes. It names the peace of sleep as something God gives, not something you must manufacture. Let the words become your own prayer, asking him to make your rest safe and settled.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks plainly about the limits of human effort. Use it to confess that you cannot keep everything going on your own, and to ask God to give your sleep as a gift.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him. Pray this verse by naming one specific burden you are carrying tonight and bringing it to him as you would set down a heavy bag at the door.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

This psalm speaks of lying down and waking again because the Lord sustains. Use it to thank God for the night’s protection and for the simple fact that you woke up safe, and to ask him to keep you the same way tonight.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with a mind fixed on God. When your thoughts start racing, pray this verse slowly, returning your attention to him each time your mind drifts toward tomorrow’s problems.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the house is quiet, usually after you have finished brushing your teeth and before you get into bed. Keep a glass of water and a small lamp nearby so you are not reaching for the phone. If you can, pray with your hands open on your lap or resting on the blanket, a small physical sign that you are letting go of what you have been gripping all day.

If you share a home with someone, ask them to pray with you, or to pray the same words for you in the next room. If you are alone, consider texting a friend or family member a single line: “Praying for your rest tonight.” Sharing the prayer, even at a distance, reminds you that you are not the only one awake in the dark.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he quiet every worry that has followed you home, and may you wake with strength and a clear heart. Rest well, and know that you are held.
