This bedtime prayer is for the end of a day when someone you love is still out on the road, in the air, or on their way back to you. It is meant to be prayed in the evening, after the house is quiet or while you lie awake waiting for the sound of a key or a car in the drive. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for a Safe Return Home

Lord, the day is ending, and [name] is not yet home. I thank you that you have been with them since they left, on the highway, in the parking lot, in every turn and stop along the way. You know every mile between here and there, and you know the hour they will walk through the door. I release my worry about the traffic, the weather, the tired driver in the next lane, and the thousand small things I cannot control.

Watch over them tonight, Father. Keep their eyes clear and their hands steady on the wheel. Be the calm in their thoughts if they are weary, and the company in their silence if they are alone. Guard the roads they travel and the hands that help them along the way. Where there is danger I cannot see, go before them and make the path safe.

Now I give you my own restless heart. Let me rest in the knowledge that you do not sleep and you do not lose track of anyone in your care. Bring them home in your good time, and let me wake to find them safe. Thank you for what you have already done and for what you will do before morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, [name] is still on the way home, and I am tired of watching the clock. Keep them safe on every road and in every hour until they are back with us. Settle my heart so I can rest, trusting that you are awake and near them. Bring them home well, and let me be grateful when they arrive. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the person who is traveling and asking God to guard their going out and their coming in. It reminds you that protection is not limited to one place or one trip, and it gives you words for the whole stretch of their journey.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you prepare to sleep, letting it become your own confession. Ask God to give you the rest you need while the person you love is still on the road, trusting that safety does not depend on your staying awake.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for angelic protection over the traveler, whether they are on foot, in a car, or in the air. Pray it with specific names and specific places so the words feel grounded in the real journey ahead.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to passing through hard places, which is what a long journey can feel like. Pray that God would be with the one traveling in any water, fire, or uncertain stretch, and that they would come through with his presence intact.

Psalm 139:7-10

7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this passage to remember that the one you love is never beyond God’s reach, even in the farthest distance or the darkest hour. Let it settle your fear that they are somewhere you cannot follow, because God is already there.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, after the last light is off or while you sit on the edge of the bed with the phone face down beside you. A quiet corner, a favorite chair, or the kitchen table with a cup of tea can all work. If you can, keep your hands busy with something simple, like folding a blanket, holding a rosary, or resting one palm on a Bible, so your body settles while your mind turns toward God.

You may also invite someone else in your home or your church to pray it with you, or to pray it over the traveler at the same hour. Speaking the names aloud together can make the distance feel smaller. When you finish, let the prayer end in silence for a moment before you check a message or turn out the lamp.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep [name] on every road and bring them home in peace. May he be a shield around them by day and a lamp to their feet by night. And may you, who are waiting, rest in the quiet assurance that the one who watches over Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.
