This short prayer for compassion is for the moments when you feel hardened, distracted, or simply unable to see another person’s pain clearly. Pray it when you are about to respond to someone in frustration, when you read news that makes you turn away, or when you notice your own heart growing cold toward someone close to you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Short Prayer for Compassion

Lord, you see the people around me more clearly than I do. You know the weight they carry, the things they have not told anyone, and the fears they hide behind a tired smile or a sharp word. I confess that I often rush past them. I am busy, I am tired, and I want my own concerns to come first. Soften my heart today. Open my eyes to notice the person sitting next to me, the one standing in line, and the one at home who needs me to slow down and listen.

Give me the patience to hear the whole story before I form my judgment. When someone’s pain irritates me, remind me that you have been patient with me in my own failures again and again. Let my words carry gentleness, and let my hands be ready to help where help is needed. Where I cannot fix a situation, teach me to stay present and to pray for the people I cannot reach. Fill me with your tender mercy so that it spills over into how I treat others, even when it costs me something.

Thank you for loving people with a steadiness I could never manufacture on my own. Make me more like you, Lord, in how I see and care for those you have placed in my life. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, open my eyes to the person in front of me. Soften what has hardened in me, and slow my response until I have truly listened. Let your kindness move through my words and my hands right now. Help me to care the way you care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to put on compassion like clothing. Pray this verse by asking God to dress you each morning in mercy, so that kindness becomes the natural thing you reach for when someone disappoints or troubles you.

Matthew 9:36

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.

(WEB)

Here Jesus looks at the crowds and feels deep pity because they are worn out and scattered. Pray this verse by asking him to show you the people around you with the same clear, caring sight that saw past the surface of their need.

Luke 10:33-34

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, 34 came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

(WEB)

The Samaritan stops when others walk by. Pray these verses by asking God to make you someone who notices, stops, and acts when a neighbor is hurting, even when the timing is inconvenient.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

This verse gathers justice, mercy, and humility into one way of living. Pray it by asking for a merciful spirit in your everyday choices, especially toward people who cannot repay your kindness.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties compassion to forgiveness and to the mercy God has shown us. Pray this verse by thanking God for his kindness to you, then asking him to let that same kindness flow toward someone who has hurt you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version in the quiet of the early morning, before the day’s demands arrive, perhaps at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in your hands. Holding a warm mug or a pen while you pray gives your restless body something to do and keeps your attention from drifting. If you are a parent, a caregiver, or someone who works with the public, you may find it helpful to keep the shorter version on a card in your pocket or on your phone.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else. A spouse, a close friend, or a small group can take turns reading one paragraph each, which often helps when compassion feels hard to find on your own. Pray it again before a difficult conversation or a visit to someone who is grieving or ill, and let the words prepare your heart before you walk in the door.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord open your eyes to see the people around you as he sees them. May his tenderness settle into your heart and shape every word you speak and every kindness you offer today. May you be given the strength to care well, and the peace to rest in the knowledge that you are loved.
