This short prayer is for the moment someone is leaving, driving, flying or walking home, and for the people who are waiting for them to arrive. You can pray it before a trip begins, as the car pulls out of the driveway, or when you are sitting at a kitchen table wondering why the phone has not rung yet. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for a Safe Return Home

Lord, you know every road I will travel and every mile between here and home. I ask you to go before me and to be with me in the car, on the train, or wherever my feet take me today. Keep my hands steady on the wheel, my mind clear, and my attention where it belongs. Guard me from careless drivers, from tired judgment, and from the small mistakes that become big ones when we rush.

Father, I also lift up the people who are waiting for me. Give them peace while they wait and let them not lie awake imagining the worst. Surround my family and friends with your protection, and let them know you are with them as much as you are with me. Bring me back to them safely, and let our homecoming be a place where we can give you thanks together. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, keep me safe on this journey and bring me home to the people I love. Watch over every turn, every step and every stranger I pass along the way. Calm my heart and steady my hands, and let me arrive without harm. Be with those waiting for me and give them rest until I am through the door. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Read this verse as a promise you can speak back to God before you leave. Ask him to guard your going out and your coming in, and let the words remind you that your trip is held in his care from start to finish.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the road ahead, naming the specific journey you are about to take. Thank God that his angels are assigned to watch over his people, and ask him to send that protection with you today.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your plans feel uncertain or when you are anxious about the route. Ask God to make your path straight and to help you trust his direction over your own worry as you drive or travel.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to mind when the journey feels dangerous or when you pass a stretch of road that makes you nervous. Pray that God would be with you in every difficult place and that you would not be overwhelmed along the way.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This blessing can be prayed over the person leaving or over the family waiting at home. Ask the Lord to keep, to shine his face upon, and to give peace to everyone involved in the trip and the return.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the full prayer in the car before you turn the key, or at the front door as you say goodbye to the people you are leaving behind. Keep one hand on the steering wheel, the strap of your bag, or the hand of a child as you speak, so that your body is joined to the words. If you are the one staying home, pray the shorter version while you make dinner or fold the laundry, and let each breath remind you that God is still watching over the one who is traveling.

Invite someone else to pray with you, whether a spouse, a roommate or a friend on the phone. Ask them to pray the sections about the people who are waiting while you pray for the traveler. Many families find that praying together before a trip brings a calm that lasts through the hours of waiting, and it turns the uncertainty of distance into a shared act of trust.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and walk beside you on every mile of the road. May he keep you safe from harm, bring you home with a grateful heart, and fill the hearts of those waiting for you with the peace that comes from knowing you are held in his hands.
