This night prayer is for asking God to watch over a friend who is sick, to ease their pain, and to keep them in his care while you rest. It is meant to be prayed in the evening or at bedtime, when the day is winding down and the worry tends to grow quiet and heavy. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words, adding your friend’s name and specific needs.

Night Prayer for a Sick Friend

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you my friend who is unwell tonight. You know the exact places where it hurts, the restless hours, the fear that comes when the lights go out and the room is too quiet. I ask you to be close to them now. Give them rest that is real and deep, the kind that lets the body heal. Where there is pain, ease it. Where there is fever, cool it. Where there is fear, replace it with your peace.

I also ask for the people who are sitting up with them tonight, the nurses and doctors, the family members who are tired and running on empty, and the friends who wish they could do more. Give each of them wisdom for the decisions that have to be made and patience for the long hours. Keep them from despair. Remind them that they are not carrying this alone.

Thank you that you never sleep and never grow weary. Thank you that my friend is held in your hands whether they feel it or not, and that nothing about their condition is hidden from you. I release my worry into your care and trust you with the night ahead. Stay with them, Father, and let morning bring some sign of your mercy. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my friend is sick and I cannot stay awake to watch over them. Be with them through this night. Ease the pain, quiet the fear, and give them rest. Hold the ones who are caring for them and give them strength. I trust you with them while I sleep, because you do not slumber or grow tired. Thank you for your faithful love. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse as a statement of trust over your friend. Ask God to give them the kind of sleep that comes from knowing they are kept safe, even when their body feels anything but secure.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask God to stay awake on your friend’s behalf. Thank him that the one who watches over Israel never drifts off, and ask him to keep your friend under that same unbroken watch.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

When your friend is weak, this verse becomes a prayer for strength to be given. Ask God to supply power where the body has none and to renew what illness has drained away.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God as a request for healing and comfort. Name the wounds your friend carries, both in the body and in the heart, and ask the Lord who heals to tend to each one.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this invitation over your friend at the end of a hard day. Ask Jesus to draw them into rest, so that the weariness of illness and worry can be set down at his feet tonight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place at the end of your day, ideally before you turn off the light. Sit or kneel where you can be still, and keep your friend’s name or a photo nearby if that helps you focus. Some people find it helpful to hold a glass of water or a small object while they pray, something that gives the hands a task while the mind settles. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to name what is on your heart.

If others love your friend, consider asking them to pray the same words at the same hour. Agreeing together, even from separate homes, gives you both a sense of being part of something larger. You might also text your friend a short line of the prayer in the morning, letting them know that someone was holding them up through the night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your friend in the night and bring them to morning with strength renewed. May he guard their going out and their coming in, and may his peace settle over them like a quilt pulled gently up to the chin. And may you, who have prayed for them, sleep well knowing you have handed them over to the one who never stops caring.
