This evening prayer is written for a small group, such as a Bible study, a home fellowship, a prayer circle or a group of friends who meet each week. It is meant to be prayed at the close of the day, when the group is gathering to rest, to release the day’s burdens, and to ask for protection through the night. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs of the people in your room.

Evening Prayer for a Small Group

Lord, the day is ending, and we bring it to you as we gather together. Some of us are carrying work that did not go well, a conversation we wish we had handled differently, or a worry about money, health or family that follows us into the evening. Some of us are tired in ways that sleep alone does not fix. We set all of it down in front of you. Take what we cannot carry, and show us what needs to be left behind until morning.

Thank you for the people sitting with us tonight. Thank you for the shared stories, the honest prayers, the laughter that broke the quiet, and the simple fact that we are not alone. Bless each person here by name, and bless the ones who could not come, the friends who are sick, the families who are grieving, and the neighbors we see but do not know. Let this group be a place where people feel known and where no one has to pretend.

Keep us through the night. Guard our homes, our sleep and our loved ones who are far away. Give us rest that restores us, and dreams that are not filled with fear. When we wake, meet us with fresh mercy and remind us that your faithfulness starts again every morning. We trust you with what we did not finish today and with what tomorrow holds. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are tired and we are grateful. Take the weight of this day from our shoulders and hold the people in this room who are struggling tonight. Surround our homes with your peace and keep our sleep sound. Thank you for being with us in every hour, and for the friends you have given us to walk alongside. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as the group settles in for the night. Pray it as a declaration that rest is a gift God gives, not something you must earn by finishing every task. Ask him to let each person in the room lay down the day’s pressure and sleep with trust.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to the anxious habit of working late and worrying longer. Pray it together as a confession of the group’s need to stop striving. Thank God that he cares for his people even while they sleep.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Invite each person to name one burden they are carrying tonight. Then pray Jesus’ invitation over those specific burdens, asking him to give the weary rest and to help the group see that they do not have to carry everything alone.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When the day has been hard, this passage gives the group a reason to hope for the morning. Pray that the faithfulness and mercy of God would be new for each person when they wake, and give thanks for that steady, renewing love.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this verse to turn the group’s worries into prayers. Take turns naming concerns aloud, and ask God for the peace that guards hearts and minds. Close by thanking him that he hears every request, even the ones spoken quietly.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer near the end of your meeting, after the study or sharing time and before people head home. Sit in a circle if you can, with the lights lowered a little, so that the room feels quieter and more personal. Invite each person to hold a cup of tea, a candle or a small stone in their hands while the prayer is read, which can help a restless mind stay on the words. If someone is not ready to speak, let them simply listen and say amen in their own time.

Ask one person to read the main prayer aloud, and let others add a sentence of their own after each paragraph if they feel led. Keep the group’s own names and needs at the front of your thinking, and pause after each one. Anyone in the group can also take this prayer home and pray it on their own, or with a spouse, roommate or child, so that the fellowship of the group continues beyond the meeting.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless each one of you and keep you through the night. May he lift the weight you have carried today and fill your rest with his peace. May you wake to his mercy, which is new every morning, and may you know that you are held by people who love you and by a God who never sleeps.
