This is a night prayer for a stronger marriage, written to be prayed at the end of the day once the house is quiet and the lights are going out. It asks God to settle what was tense or unfinished between you and your spouse, to guard your home while you sleep, and to draw you closer rather than further apart. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.
Night Prayer for a Stronger Marriage
Lord, thank You for this day and for the person You have given me to share my life with. You know the conversations we had, the ones we meant to have, and the silences that sat between us at dinner. Forgive me where I was short, dismissive or too quick to defend myself. Forgive us both for the small resentments we carried into bed without saying a word about them.
Be present in our marriage tonight. Where we have drifted into living as roommates with separate schedules and separate worries, draw us back to each other. Give us patience for the things that frustrate us and kindness for the things we have not yet learned to say well. Protect what we share from the pressures of work, money, family and the noise of every screen we carry.
Guard our sleep and our hearts. If either of us lies awake with worry, meet us there and quiet our minds. Keep us faithful in thought and in deed, and let tomorrow begin with a fresh start between us. Thank You that You are faithful even when we are not. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, we come to You at the end of this day. Heal what was hurt between us, soften what has grown hard, and help us turn toward each other instead of away. Guard our home while we sleep and grant us rest. Make our marriage stronger in love, patience and trust, and let us wake up glad to face the day together. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
Pray this verse when you feel the weight of keeping your marriage together. Ask the Lord to build what only He can build, and to free you from carrying every outcome alone at night.
Ecclesiastes 4:12
If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let it remind you that two people bound to God are stronger than one. Thank Him for your spouse as a companion and ask Him to keep the cord between you unbroken.
1 Corinthians 13:4-5
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…
(WEB)
Use these words as a checklist before sleep. Confess where you have fallen short of patience and kindness that day, and ask God to shape your heart toward love that does not keep score.
Ephesians 4:26
“Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath…
(WEB)
Pray this verse if anger lingered between you. Ask God to help you address hurt before the day ends, and to keep resentment from settling into the night with you.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Let this verse carry you into sleep. Ask the Lord to make you lie down in peace and to keep you safe in your home, trusting Him with the things you cannot control.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time when you and your spouse are both near the end of the day, such as after the lights are turned off or as you settle in bed. You can pray it silently, side by side, or aloud if you are comfortable doing so. Some couples hold hands while one prays, then switch roles. Others keep a small notebook on the nightstand and write down one thing they are thankful for and one thing they want to bring to God.
If you are praying alone because your spouse is not yet ready to join you, that is still a meaningful act of love. Pray for your spouse by name, and let your prayers shape how you speak to them the next morning. A trusted friend, a pastor or a small group can also pray this prayer with you and for your marriage, which often makes it easier to keep returning to it night after night.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord guard this marriage while you sleep and keep both hearts tender toward one another. May His peace settle over your home and His faithfulness hold you both through the night. Rise in the morning with fresh grace, ready to love well, and rest in the knowledge that you are held.
