This daily prayer for an elderly parent is written for the times you carry your mother’s or father’s frailty, memory, health and fears into your own day. Pray it in the morning with a cup of coffee, in the car before a visit, or by the phone before a call. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Daily Prayer for an Elderly Parent
Lord, you know the body that is slowing down and the mind that sometimes loses its way. You know the pills on the kitchen counter, the stairs that have become harder to climb, and the appointments that fill the calendar. Thank you for the years this parent has lived and for the love that shaped me. Today I bring them to you in their weakness, and I ask you to meet them with strength that does not run out.
Give them rest when their nights are restless and comfort when pain wakes them. Guard their dignity when they feel they are a burden, and remind them that they are still loved for who they are and not only for what they can do. Give me patience when I repeat myself, gentleness when I feel tired, and a willing heart for the work of caring. Keep me from resentment, and help me to notice the small mercies in each day. Be near to them and near to me. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, my parent is in your hands today. Steady their steps, ease their pain, and calm their worries. Give them peace in the quiet hours and company when they feel alone. Give me strength for what this day asks and grace for my own weariness. Thank you that you never tire and never forget them. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 71:9
Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.
(WEB)
Pray this when your parent fears being set aside or forgotten. Ask God to be the one who does not turn away, and let the verse remind you that their age does not change their worth in his eyes.
Isaiah 46:4
Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.
(WEB)
This verse speaks of God carrying his people from birth to old age. Pray it over your parent’s fear of being a weight, and ask the Lord to show them that he has borne them all along.
Psalm 92:14
They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…
(WEB)
Pray this for the fruitfulness that can remain in later years, even when strength is less. Ask God to keep your parent’s spirit fresh and to let their life still bear good things for others.
Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
(WEB)
Use this passage on the days that feel heavy for both of you. Thank God that his mercies are renewed each morning, and ask for fresh mercy for your parent and for yourself.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray these verses over anxiety about health, money or the future. Bring each worry to God in prayer and ask that his peace would guard your parent’s heart and your own.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time that is yours before the day begins, such as while the kettle heats or before you leave for a visit. Sit somewhere quiet and hold something in your hands, like a cup, a rosary, or the card of your parent’s medication schedule, so that your body stays with the words. If you are a sibling or part of a family, pray it together by phone or over a shared message, and let each person add one name or one need.
Some days you may not feel like praying at all. On those days read only the shorter version and let it be enough. Return to the longer prayer when you have more room. Ask a pastor, a friend from church or a caregiver support group to pray for you as well, because the work of caring for an aging parent is best carried by more than one pair of hands.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who has kept your parent through every season keep them still in this one. May he give them rest in their body and peace in their mind, and may he give you, their child, a steady heart for each day you are given together.
