This short prayer is written for an expectant mother, to be prayed during pregnancy, especially on nights when worry is loud or on mornings before a checkup. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and fears into the empty places. Either way, it gives words to a heart that is often too full to find its own.

Short Prayer for an Expectant Mother

Lord, you knew this child before the first heartbeat was ever heard. Thank you for the life growing in her, and for the body that is working so hard, often in ways she cannot see or control. Be near her in the tiredness, the nausea, the swollen ankles, and the nights when she cannot find a comfortable position. Give her rest that comes from trusting you, not only from sleep.

We bring you the fears she may not say out loud. Calm the fear about the delivery, about what the baby needs, and about whether she will be enough for this little one. Guard the baby’s health and her own, and give wisdom and skill to every doctor, nurse and midwife who cares for them. Where there is uncertainty, let her hold it open before you instead of gripping it alone.

Surround her with people who will carry her load, listen to her, and remind her she is not forgotten. Fill the days ahead with quiet moments where she can feel your presence. Keep her heart steady, and let peace settle over her as she waits. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, protect this mother and the child within her. Steady her breathing, quiet her worry, and help her rest in your care. Give the doctors wisdom and give her courage for each day as it comes. Thank you that she is never alone in this waiting. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Pray these words over the baby, thanking God that the child was shaped with care and known fully before birth. Let the mother hear that her growing child is not an accident of biology but a deliberate work of God.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Use this verse when fear rises in the middle of the night. Pray that God would strengthen her heart and steady her grip, reminding her that his presence is nearer than her anxiety.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Pray that the mother would know the gentle care of the Shepherd who carries the young, and that she would sense his tender leading for her and the child in the days ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many expectant mothers find that the early morning, before the day’s demands begin, is the best time to pray. Sit somewhere comfortable and quiet, perhaps with a hand resting on the belly, and read the prayer slowly. Pausing between sentences lets the words settle in, and it gives you room to add a name or a specific fear that the page could not know about.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with her, such as a partner, a close friend, a mother, or a small group from church. Hearing the prayer spoken by another voice can bring comfort on days when she feels too tired to pray herself. Ask them to pray it in their own words as well, so that the prayer stays personal and alive.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who formed this child keep the mother close and calm through every season of waiting. May he give her strength for the labor ahead and joy in the arrival of her little one. May she rest today in the knowledge that she is loved, and the child is held, by a faithful God.
