This short morning prayer is for the day you face a decision that matters: a job offer, a move, a major purchase, a hard conversation about a future. You can pray it as you wake or over your first cup of coffee, reading it aloud exactly as written or using it as a starting point for your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for an Important Decision

Lord, I wake up today carrying a decision that feels heavy. Before I reach for my phone or start the list of things waiting for me, I want to bring it to you. You already know every option on the table, and you know what I cannot see yet. Help me to be honest with myself about what I want and what I fear, so that I do not mistake anxiety for wisdom or pride for conviction.

Give me clear thinking this morning. Slow down my racing thoughts and quiet the voices that push me toward a quick answer. Where I have been asking for advice, help me weigh it carefully. Where I have been avoiding the question, give me courage to face it. Guide the conversations I will have today, the emails I will send, and the choices I will make in small moments, so that each one points in the direction you are leading me.

Father, I release my need to be certain. I ask only for the next faithful step and the peace to take it. Keep my heart open to your direction, even if it differs from what I had planned. Thank you that I do not have to decide in my own strength. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I have a decision in front of me and I do not know the right answer yet. Give me a clear mind for the next hour and a calm heart for the rest of the day. Show me the next honest step, and help me take it without fear of getting it wrong. I trust you with what I cannot see. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific choice in front of you and asking for the wisdom you lack. James promises that God gives generously and without scolding, so you can ask plainly, without apologizing for needing help.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and notice the two halves: trusting God rather than relying only on your own judgment, and acknowledging him in every path. Use it to surrender the outcome you are tempted to control this morning.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this as a request to be taught and guided, especially in the ordinary details of the day. The psalm pictures God as a patient guide who keeps his eye on you, which can steady a restless mind.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Ask God to make his direction audible in your daily routine, through a quiet conviction, a wise word from someone you trust, or a closed door. Pray for ears to hear and a willingness to follow when the path becomes clear.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to bring your worries about the decision into prayer, with thanksgiving alongside your requests. Ask God to guard your heart and mind with his peace while you wait for clarity.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer while you are still in bed or sitting at the kitchen table before the day gets busy. Keep a notebook nearby so you can write down any thought, worry, or insight that comes up while you pray, and return to it later in the day. If your hands feel restless, hold a cup of coffee or a pen as a physical reminder that you are setting the decision down before God.

You might also ask a trusted friend, spouse, or pastor to pray this prayer with you or for you, especially on the days when the decision feels most pressing. Sharing the request with someone who knows you well can bring fresh perspective and remind you that you are not carrying the choice alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you clarity for the choices ahead and peace in the places where you still feel unsure. May he guide your steps today, one faithful decision at a time, and may you walk forward knowing that he is with you in every step.
