This is a short prayer for the days and hours before an exam, when your mind is crowded with questions about what you have studied and what you have not. Pray it the night before, in the car on the way to the testing room, or in the quiet moment before you open the paper. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries into your own words.

Short Prayer for an Upcoming Exam

Lord, you know what is on my mind tonight. I am worried about the test, about the questions I may not know, and about the time running out on me. I have studied, and I am asking you to help me remember what I have learned and to think clearly when I sit down. Calm the racing thoughts in my head so that I can read each question carefully instead of rushing through it.

Father, I also bring you the fear of failing and the pressure I feel from people who are counting on a good result. Remind me that my worth does not rise and fall with a grade. Help me to do my honest best, to accept whatever comes, and to keep my hope in you rather than in the outcome. Give me rest so that I can sleep tonight and wake up ready. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am nervous and my mind feels scattered. Please steady me right now. Help me remember what I have learned, slow my breathing, and give me clear thoughts for the first question. I trust you with the rest of the test, one question at a time. Thank you that I do not have to carry this alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

When you feel stuck on a question or unsure which answer to choose, pray this verse as a request for wisdom. Ask God to bring the right idea to mind and to show you where to focus your energy.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the anxiety you feel as the exam approaches. Name each worry to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that guards your heart while you wait.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Pray these words when your own plans for the test feel uncertain or when you are tempted to depend only on your memory. Ask God to direct your steps through every section of the exam.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

This verse speaks to fear in the moments before a hard task. Read it slowly, and let God’s promise to be with you settle the frightened parts of your mind.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse to refocus your effort on doing your work faithfully for God. It can free you from the need to prove yourself and help you give the exam your honest best.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time and place, such as your bed the night before, a seat in the library, or a few minutes in the car before you walk into the building. Sitting with your hands open in your lap, or holding a pen or your study notes, can help your body settle while you speak. If you feel your breathing getting fast, pause, take a slow breath, and then continue.

You can also ask a parent, friend, or church member to pray this prayer with you or for you. Tell them the date and time of the exam so they can pray at that moment. Knowing that someone else is lifting you up can make the morning of the test feel less lonely.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a clear mind and a calm heart as you sit down to this exam. May he bring to your memory what you need, and may he steady your hands and your thoughts from the first question to the last. Whatever the result, may you walk out knowing that you are loved and held by God.
