This bedtime prayer for children’s safety is written for parents, grandparents, and caregivers who want to ask God to watch over the little ones in their care as the day closes. Pray it in the evening, after the lights are low and before you turn in, or at the bedside as you tuck a child in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Children’s Safety

Lord, thank you for this day and for the children you have placed in our home. As the light fades, we give them back to you. We hand over the scraped knees, the arguments over toys, the questions we could not answer, and the fears that came up when the house got quiet. Settle their hearts so they can rest, and quiet every worry that keeps them from sleeping.

Father, we ask you to guard them through the night. Keep them from harm in their beds, in the dark hallway, and in the rooms we cannot see. Protect them from sickness, from accidents, from anyone who would hurt them, and from the dangers they do not yet understand. Be the one who stands watch while we sleep, because we cannot be awake for every moment.

Thank you that you never sleep and never grow tired of caring for us. Wrap these children in your peace, let them wake refreshed and safe, and help us trust you with what we cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank you for our children. Tonight we give them into your keeping. Guard them from every harm, seen and unseen, and let them sleep in your peace. Help them wake tomorrow knowing they were held. Calm our hearts too, and remind us that you are awake even when we are not. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your children as you lie down to sleep, asking God to grant them the same settled rest that David found in trusting him. Speak it slowly so they can hear that safety comes from the Lord.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this verse to remind God and yourself that the one who watches over Israel does not doze off. Pray that he would keep your children under his watchful care through every hour of the night.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God giving rest to those he loves. Ask him to give your children sleep that comes easily, and to free you from the habit of lying awake with anxious thoughts.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for children who struggle with fear at night. Ask God to keep their minds fixed on him so they can find peace even when the room feels too dark.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Offer this promise to God on behalf of your children, asking him to remain with them in every frightening moment. Pray that they would know they are never alone, even when no one else is nearby.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as right after bath and storytime, so that the prayer becomes part of the nighttime routine your children expect. Sit on the edge of the bed, hold a hand or rest your palm on a small back, and keep your voice gentle. If you have a child who is afraid of the dark, invite them to pray a line of their own before you finish.

Parents who share a home can pray this together, taking turns with the sentences. Grandparents, babysitters, and older siblings can also use it when they are the ones putting a child to bed. Keep a copy of the prayer near the light switch or on the nightstand, so you can say it from memory on nights when you are tired.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep these children safe through the night and bring them to morning with joy. May his peace rest on them like a warm blanket, and may they know they are loved by a God who never sleeps. Sleep well, little ones, and rise in the light of his care.
