This evening prayer for daily grace is written for the close of the day, when the work is done or as done as it will get, and the mind keeps replaying what went wrong and what is still undone. Pray it at the kitchen table, in bed with the lights off, or in the car before you walk into the house. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your heart needs to go further.

Evening Prayer for Daily Grace

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day tired in body and tired in spirit. I think about the conversations that went badly, the things I said that I wish I could take back, and the tasks that are still sitting on my list. Some of what I carried today was heavy, and some of it I picked up on my own when I should have left it with you. Forgive me for the moments I tried to be my own strength. Thank you that your mercy is not used up by the end of a single day.

I ask you for grace for tomorrow, the kind that meets me at the coffee pot and in the traffic and in the third difficult email before lunch. Give me patience with the people I love most, because they are the ones who see me at my worst. Help me notice the small kindnesses I received today and the good work that happened even when I did not feel it. Quiet the worry about money, health, and the people I cannot fix. Guard my sleep tonight, and let me wake without dread. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and I know it. Forgive the places where I tried to carry everything by myself today. Give me rest tonight and grace for the morning. Hold the people I love, and keep me from the worry that keeps me awake. Thank you for being near when I cannot see the way ahead. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a good one to pray when your thoughts are racing at bedtime. Read it slowly, then tell the Lord that you are choosing to lie down in his safety rather than in your own anxious planning for tomorrow.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words over the failures of the day. Thank God that his compassion is new each morning, and ask him to give you a fresh start when you wake up, without the weight of yesterday’s mistakes.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

When you feel vulnerable in the dark or lie awake worrying about the people you love, use this passage to remind yourself that God does not doze off on watch. Ask him to keep your household safe through the night.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to people who are exhausted from carrying burdens. Bring him the specific loads you have been holding today, name them one by one, and let him take them from your hands.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This psalm reminds you that rest is a gift from God and not a reward you must earn. Pray it as permission to stop striving, and ask the Lord to give sleep to you as he gives it to those he loves.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after the dishes are done or once the house goes quiet, and pray this prayer at the same time each night. Sit somewhere comfortable and keep your phone out of reach. If you are someone who falls asleep mid-sentence, it is fine to pray it sitting on the edge of the bed with the lamp still on.

Try holding something in your hands while you pray, like a warm mug, a rosary, or your own open palms resting on your knees. The physical act can help you release the day. If you share a home with a spouse, child, or roommate, invite them to pray the blessing at the end over one another, and you will find the prayer carries further than you expected.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he meet you in your weariness with a grace that is sufficient for this day and for the one that follows. May your sleep be deep and your heart be light, and may you wake to find his mercy waiting for you again.
