This evening prayer is for the end of a day when your family feels stretched thin, when voices ran higher than they should have or someone went to bed without a word of goodwill. Pray it at bedtime, once everyone is home or as close to settled as you can get. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.
Evening Prayer for Family Unity
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring our family to you as the lights go down. You saw the sharp word at breakfast, the door that slammed, the silence at dinner that nobody knew how to break. I confess my own part in it. I was quick to correct and slow to listen, and I wanted to be right more than I wanted to be kind. Forgive me, and forgive the ones I love for what they said and did when they were tired too.
Be the peace in this house tonight. Settle the worries that keep my children awake and the frustrations my husband carried home from work. Where there is distance between any of us, close it quietly while we sleep. Where someone feels unheard or left out, let them know they are known by you and held by the people who love them. Knit us together again, not by our effort alone, but by your patient, faithful love working in each of our hearts.
Keep us through the night. Guard our sleep, guard our going out and coming in, and wake us tomorrow with softer hearts than we had today. We trust you with what we could not fix. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, we are tired, and we have not been kind to each other today. Mend what is broken between us, quiet the anger in our house, and let each person here feel your nearness tonight. Help us begin again in the morning. Hold us all safe until then. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it at the end of the evening, after dishes are done and before lights go out, ideally in the room where your family most often gathers. Sit somewhere quiet, and hold something in your hands while you speak, such as a cup of tea, the edge of a blanket, or the hand of a child who will let you. The physical act helps the words settle.
If your spouse or an older child is willing, pray it together, taking turns reading a paragraph each. If others are not ready, pray it alone and keep a small note on the nightstand of the people you named, so you can bring them to God again the next evening.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless this family and keep each one of you through the night. May his peace settle over every room and every heart, and may you wake tomorrow to a home where love is found again.
