An evening prayer for my family is a way to bring the people you love before God at the end of the day, releasing its worries and asking for rest and protection through the night. Pray it at bedtime, once everyone is home or just before you turn out the lights. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and concerns on your heart.

Evening Prayer for My Family

Lord, thank you for this day and for the people you have given me to love. Thank you for each of them, for the ways they made me smile, the work they got done, and the moments we shared at the table. Now I bring them back to you. Be near to each one tonight. Quiet the restless thoughts and the worries that followed them home. Where anyone is tired, give them rest. Where anyone is afraid, remind them that you are awake and watching over them.

I pray for the hard things we carried today, the conversations that went badly, the bills we are still thinking about, the health that needs watching, and the decisions still waiting for us. I place each of them in your hands and ask you to take what we cannot fix ourselves. Guard our home from harm, both seen and unseen. Keep our children safe in their sleep, and keep my spouse steady as they face tomorrow. Let our house be a place of peace tonight.

Father, forgive the ways I was impatient or short with the people I love today. Help us wake tomorrow with fresh mercy for one another. Watch over our going out and our coming in, and hold us all in your care until morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring my family to you tonight. Thank you for today. Give each of us rest, guard our home from harm, and forgive what we did wrong. Hold the ones I worry about most, and help us wake up ready to love each other again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a statement of trust over your household. Thank God that rest is possible because he keeps watch, and ask him to give each family member a sleep that is undisturbed and unafraid.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds us that rest is a gift and not something we must earn through anxious effort. Pray it over the family members who lie awake, asking God to give them the sleep he has already provided.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask for protection through the night. Name each person in your family as you pray, trusting that the one who keeps Israel does not sleep and keeps your loved ones too.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the blessing God gave Aaron to speak over his people. Pray it slowly over each family member by name, asking that the Lord keep, face, and grace them through the night.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this passage when the day’s worries have followed you to bed. Hand each anxious thought about your family to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that steadies hearts and minds in the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as after the kids are in bed or while the dishes are drying, so the prayer becomes a habit your family can count on. Sit in a quiet place with your hands open in your lap or resting on a shared object, like a blanket or a family Bible. Some people find it helpful to light a small lamp or turn off the screens first, so the room feels set apart for God.

If your spouse, a grown child, or another relative lives with you, invite them to pray a line or two with you, or to say their own name in the prayer. Older children can add a sentence of thanks for something from their day. You can also write the names of your family on a card and read them aloud one by one, pausing briefly after each.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep each member of this family through the night and wake them in the morning with fresh strength. May he surround your home with peace, and may every person you love rest safely in his care. Go to sleep knowing that the one who never slumbers is watching over those you love.
