This evening prayer is for the end of a long day, when you have nothing left to give and need to find strength in God before you lie down. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you go in, or on the edge of the bed with the lights off. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.
Evening Prayer for Finding Strength
Lord, the day is ending and I am tired in a way that sleep alone will not fix. I carried things today that I did not set down: the conversation that went badly, the work that was never finished, the worry about money or my health or the people I love. Some of it I could handle and some of it I could not, and I am not sure which parts I handled well. Be with me now. Take the weight I have been holding and show me what is mine to carry tomorrow and what I can leave in your hands tonight.
I ask you for strength that is not my own. I have run on my own supply for too long, and it has run thin. Refill what has been drained from me. Steady my breathing and quiet my thoughts. Where I was short with someone, forgive me, and help me make it right when I can. Where I was afraid, remind me that you have not stepped away from me, not even for a moment. Keep watch over my sleep and over the people sleeping under my roof and beyond it. Let me wake with something new in me, a fresh portion of the strength I need for whatever comes. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out and I do not have words for all of it. Give me strength for the night and enough rest to get up in the morning. Hold the people I am worried about, and hold me. Take what I could not finish today and let it rest. Thank you for the small good things from this day, even the ones I almost missed. I trust you with what is left over. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time after the lights are low and the screens are off, since the transition to sleep is when many people feel the day’s pressure most. Sit or lie in a place where you can be still, and keep a glass of water or a worn blanket nearby so your hands have something gentle to hold. If you feel your mind drifting to a task on tomorrow’s list, write it down on paper, then return to the prayer.
You can also pray this with someone else. A spouse, a roommate, or a child old enough to join in can take turns reading the lines, or one person can pray while the others listen and say “Amen” at the end. Praying it aloud together can turn a lonely evening into a shared rest.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over tired people give you strength for the night and peace in the hours before you wake. May he remind you that you were never meant to carry everything alone. Rest well, and let the morning bring new mercy.
