This is a night prayer for forgiveness and healing, written to be prayed at the end of the day when your mind is tired and your conscience or your body is asking for attention. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or read it once and then speak in your own words, using it as a starting point. It works well just before you turn out the light.

Night Prayer for Forgiveness and Healing

Lord, I come to you at the close of this day and I bring you everything I carried through it. I bring the words I said too quickly, the patience I ran out of, and the moments I put myself first when I should have put others first. Where I have wronged someone, I ask you to forgive me, and I ask you to show me if there is a conversation I need to have tomorrow. Cleanse what I have done wrong and let me rest in the knowledge that my debts are no longer held against me.

I also bring you my body and my heart, which are tired and sore in ways I may not fully name. Heal the places that ache, whether in my back, my head, my chest, or my spirit. Heal the memories that replay when the house goes quiet, and the worries that climb into bed with me. Guard my sleep tonight, and keep watch over those I love while I rest. Thank you for this day, for the small mercies in it and for your faithfulness even when I did not notice it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I know I have failed you and others today. Forgive me, and cleanse me from what I have done wrong. Heal what is hurting in me tonight, in body and in heart. Keep me in your care while I sleep, and help me wake up ready to walk in your mercy again. Thank you for being near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when guilt keeps replaying in your mind at night. Thank God that the distance he puts between you and your sin is wider than anything you can measure, and ask him to help you stop carrying what he has already set down.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name specific failures from your day as you pray it. The verse says confession leads to forgiveness and cleansing, so let each named failure be handed over rather than carried into sleep.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring a particular wound or hurt before God as you pray this. The psalm describes him as one who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, so speak the name of the person or the pain you want him to tend tonight.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a good closing prayer for the night itself. Use it to hand over your fear of the dark or of the next day, trusting that rest can come because God is the one keeping watch.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this for the people in your household or those you are worried about. Ask that God would keep them safe through the night, and rest in the truth that he does not sleep or grow drowsy while you do.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after the lights are low and before you reach for your phone, if you can manage it. Sit on the edge of the bed or kneel beside it, and keep a hand open on your lap or lightly on your chest as you speak. Some people find it helpful to write down one or two things from the day they want to confess before they begin, then pray over the list and tear up the paper.

If you share a home with someone, you might pray the first paragraph together, or ask them to pray the blessing over you. If you are alone tonight, read the shorter version aloud so your voice fills the room. Whatever form you use, let the prayer end with silence rather than a rush to finish, so there is room to hear the peace it invites.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord forgive what needs forgiving and heal what needs healing in you tonight. May his peace settle over your home, your heart, and your sleep, and may you wake to a new morning held in his steady care.
