This simple prayer for forgiveness and healing is written for the moments when you feel the weight of something you have done, or something that has been done to you, and you do not know how to bring it to God. You can pray it in the morning before the day begins, in the evening when the house is quiet, or whenever the ache rises up unexpectedly. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.

Simple Prayer for Forgiveness and Healing

Lord, I come to you just as I am. I have carried things I should have set down long ago: the words I said in anger, the ways I have failed the people closest to me, and the quiet resentment I have held on to when I should have let it go. I am sorry. Forgive me for what I have done, and forgive me for the things I have left undone. Thank you that your mercy is not used up by my mistakes.

I also bring you the hurt I am still living with. Some of it was caused by others, and some of it is the slow damage of my own choices. Touch the places in my body and in my heart that feel tired, sore, or broken. Heal what I can see and what no one else can see. Help me to forgive those who have wronged me, not because what they did was small, but because I want to be free of it. Give me the courage to accept your forgiveness and to stop punishing myself for what you have already covered. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am sorry for what I have done and for what I have failed to do. Forgive me, and help me forgive those who have hurt me. Heal the wounds I carry, the ones I show and the ones I hide. Make me whole in the places where I feel broken. Thank you that you hear me even when my words are few. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when guilt keeps returning to your mind. Ask God to help you believe that the distance he places between you and your sin is wider than you imagine, and to let that truth settle where the accusation used to live.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you confess what is on your heart. Name each thing plainly before God, then receive his faithfulness and justice in forgiving you, trusting that confession opens the way to cleansing.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when your body or your heart feels bruised. Ask him to bind up the specific wounds you name, and thank him that he attends to the broken as carefully as a healer tends a injury.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Use this verse when forgiving someone feels impossible. Ask God to soften your heart toward that person, and pray for kindness to replace the bitterness you have been holding onto.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

Pray this verse if you need another person beside you in this struggle. Ask God to bring a trusted friend, pastor, or family member into your confession and healing, so that you are not carrying it alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early morning with a cup of coffee or just before sleep, and sit somewhere you can be still. Keep a pen nearby if you like, and write down anything the Holy Spirit brings to mind as you pray. Speak the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let your heart catch up with your words.

If your hands need something to do, hold them open in front of you or rest one on your chest while you pray. You might also invite someone you trust to pray the prayer with you, taking turns reading the lines aloud. Shared prayer can make the forgiveness and healing you are asking for feel less lonely and more real.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgives completely also heal fully, reaching every bruised and hidden place in your life. May you rest in the grace that meets you where you are, and may peace settle over you as you walk forward in freedom.
