This night prayer is for the end of the day, when you lie down still carrying a hurt, a harsh word, or a grudge you cannot quite put down. You can pray it at bedtime, reading it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit. Either way, it asks God to help you release the person who wronged you so that you can rest.
Night Prayer for Forgiving Others
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You what I am still holding. I keep replaying what was said to me, the careless remark, the broken promise, the way I was overlooked or dismissed. I feel the heat of it in my chest, and I do not want to carry it into the morning. Help me see that I cannot make this right on my own, and that You are the one who knows every detail I have not spoken aloud.
Father, I ask You to soften my heart toward the one I need to forgive. I do not ask You to pretend the harm did not happen, and I do not ask You to make me feel fine right away. I ask You to loosen my grip on the debt they owe me. Where I have been tempted to hope they suffer, turn that hope toward their good. Where I have rehearsed revenge in my mind, quiet it. Let me entrust the justice of this to You.
Keep me safe through the night, Lord. Guard my sleep from bitterness and my dreams from the old arguments. When I wake, let me find that the weight is a little lighter than it was. Thank You for forgiving me when I have failed others, and for never running out of mercy. Teach me to receive that mercy and pass it on. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am still angry at what was done to me, and I do not want to sleep with this resentment. I choose to forgive the one who hurt me, even though my feelings have not caught up yet. Take this grudge from my hands and carry it for me. Give me rest tonight, and help me love them with the patience You have shown me. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Ephesians 4:32
And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
(WEB)
Paul ties forgiveness to the way God has already forgiven you. Before you sleep, pray this verse back to God, asking Him to shape your kindness and tenderheartedness toward the person you are struggling with.
Colossians 3:13
Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
(WEB)
This verse names forgiveness as something you do because you have been forgiven. As you pray it, name the specific offense you are bearing and ask God to help you bear with that person in patience.
Matthew 6:14-15
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
(WEB)
Jesus links our forgiveness with our forgiving others, which can feel heavy. Pray it honestly, asking God to show you where pride is keeping you from releasing the debt, and to give you grace to take the next step.
Psalm 103:12
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
(WEB)
The psalmist describes how far God removes our sins from us. Pray this at night to remind yourself that God does not keep a running tally, and ask Him to help you stop keeping one either.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
This verse speaks of lying down and sleeping in peace because God alone keeps you safe. Pray it as you settle down, handing God the unresolved conflict so you can close your eyes in trust.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, sitting on the edge of the bed or lying still with the lamp off. If you can, keep a small notebook on the nightstand and write down the name of the person you are forgiving. Pressing the pen to paper gives your hands something to do, and it makes the release feel concrete rather than vague.
If the resentment comes back in the night, you can simply whisper the shorter prayer again. A spouse, a close friend, or a pastor can also pray this with you, or pray it on your behalf when you feel too worn out to pray at all. Forgiveness is often a process of returning to God again and again, and that is part of the work.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who forgave every debt you ever owed, give you a heart that is quiet toward those who have wronged you. May He keep watch over your sleep and bring you into the morning with a lighter spirit. Rest well, knowing that you are held.
