This short prayer is for anyone carrying a broken heart, whether the wound came from a death, a divorce, a betrayal, a lost friendship, or a dream that did not survive. Pray it in the morning when the ache feels heavy before the day begins, at night when the house is quiet, or whenever grief rises without warning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where they fit.

Short Prayer for Healing a Broken Heart

Lord, my heart is broken, and I do not know how to hold all of it. Some mornings I wake up and the pain is there before I remember why. Some nights I replay what happened and wonder if I could have prevented it, or whether I will ever feel whole again. I bring you the anger, the sadness, the tiredness, and the parts of me I am ashamed to show anyone. You already know them.

Be near to me in this place. Meet me in the quiet moments when no one else can see how much I am hurting. Gently untangle the thoughts that keep me stuck, and give me honesty about what I feel without letting bitterness take root. Where I have pulled away from people who could help, show me the next small step toward them. Help me trust that you can be trusted even when I cannot yet see how this will end.

Heal what only you can heal. Mend the places where I have been hurt and teach me to rest in your care one day at a time. Let my tears be received, my questions be heard, and my heart slowly become tender again rather than hard. I give you the broken pieces and ask you to make something new from them, in your timing and in your way. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my heart hurts right now, and I cannot say much more than that. Come close to me. Hold what I cannot carry, steady my breathing, and remind me that I am not alone in this. Give me enough strength for the next hour, and trust that you will walk with me through the days after it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific reason your heart is breaking, then asking God to draw near in that exact place. It reminds you that nearness, not perfection or quick recovery, is what God offers the brokenhearted.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let the picture of God binding wounds settle over you. Ask him to show you where he is already at work, even if the healing feels slow and partial right now.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to Jesus in the words of this verse. Tell him what you are carrying, and ask him to show you what it looks like to set down some of that weight today.

Psalm 56:8

You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?

(WEB)

Use this verse when tears come. Thank God that your sorrow is noticed and remembered, and ask him to receive the tears you have not been able to explain to anyone else.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the comfort you need now and for the courage to offer comfort to others later. It shows that God’s consolation is meant to pass through people who have been hurt and healed in turn.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose one consistent time, such as the first cup of coffee or the moment before you turn off the bedside lamp, so the prayer becomes a steady place to return rather than something you remember only in crisis. If your body feels restless, try writing the prayer by hand or pressing your palm flat against your chest as you read. Physical stillness can help a heavy heart slow down enough to listen.

Consider asking a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray this prayer over you, or to pray it with you by phone or in person. Hearing another voice say the words can remind you that the church carries you when your own strength runs thin. Be patient if you do not feel different right away, because healing of the heart often unfolds slowly over weeks and seasons.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who collects every tear hold your heart with tenderness today. May he steady you in the hard hours, bring people alongside you who understand, and gently restore what sorrow has torn loose. May you know, even in the ache, that you are deeply loved and never forgotten.
