This bedtime prayer is for the end of the day, when you want to hand your brother over to God before you sleep. You can pray it in the evening, after the lights go low and the day’s noise has settled. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the things that are weighing on him tonight.

Bedtime Prayer for My Brother

Lord, as this day comes to an end, I bring my brother to you. You know where he has been today, the conversations he had, the work he finished or left undone, and the thoughts that followed him home. Some of those thoughts are heavy. I ask you to take the worry he carried out of the house and into the evening, and to leave him lighter than he was when he woke. Quiet his mind where it is racing, and let the things he could not solve today stay with you until morning.

Watch over his body as he sleeps. Give him rest that is deep enough to repair what was worn down, and protect him from fear in the dark hours. If he is struggling with his health, his finances, a relationship, or a decision he cannot yet see past, be near him in each of those places. Remind him that he is not alone in them, even when he feels that way. Keep him safe on the roads and in the places he will go tomorrow, and bring him back home to you.

Thank you for the good things in his day, even the small ones he may not have noticed: a kind word, a warm meal, a moment of laughter. Thank you for the way you have loved him through every season of his life, and for the way you have loved me through my brother. Let him wake up knowing that he belongs to you and that your faithfulness is new every morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my brother is tired, and I am asking you to give him rest tonight. Calm what is anxious in him and guard him while he sleeps. Keep him safe from harm and from the fears that visit at night. Thank you that you never sleep and that he can rest because you are awake. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly over your brother as you picture him lying down. Ask God to give him the kind of peace that lets him sleep without bracing against the night, and thank God that safety does not depend on his own vigilance.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the restless habit of worrying until the last minute. Ask God to remind your brother that rest is a gift he receives, not a reward he must earn by finishing everything first.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this promise to ask God to keep watch over your brother through the whole night. Pray that he would sleep knowing that the one who guards Israel does not drift off or fall asleep on duty.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring to God the exhaustion your brother carries, whether it is physical, emotional or spiritual. Ask Jesus to lift the weight he has been holding and to give him rest in the places where he feels most depleted.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray that your brother would hand over each worry to God before it turns into sleeplessness. Ask that the peace of God, which is larger than anything he can understand, would settle his heart and guard his thoughts through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each evening, such as when you turn off the lamp or when you are brushing your teeth, so the prayer becomes a steady habit rather than something you remember only on hard nights. If you live with your brother or can sit near him, place a hand on his shoulder or on the back of a chair while you pray. If you are apart, hold his name in your mind while you lie down, or keep a small note with his name by your bed as a reminder.

You can also invite others to pray this with you or for him. A parent, a spouse, a close friend or a church prayer group can speak the same words over him on their own nights, so that he is being covered by more than one voice. Pray it again the next evening, and the evening after that, even when it feels routine, because faithful repetition is itself a way of trusting God with the long story of your brother’s life.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your brother and keep him through the night. May he wake refreshed, lighter in heart, and ready for the day that God has already prepared for him. May the peace of God rest over him like a blanket, and may he know, when morning comes, that he has never been forgotten.
